First off: IT IS FREAKIN FREEZIN!!!!!!!!! you people that like the snow are Nuts. It has reached the 20s here for more than a week!! and i want it to end NOW!!!!!

Now here is the real reason i started this thread.

Over the last week and some days the Everglades along with the rest of Florida has been in the 30's and LOWER.. I am not sure if anyone else other than floridians has seen the videos of Iguanas falling frozen from Trees. If you havent here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOeyCPnv5Yg

A friend and i were talking about the berms, retics and other non native snakes that are loose in Florida and how they might not survive the frozen temps.. Maybe this is Mother Nature's way of "Taking Care" of all the non native species and therefore no need for the Ban??? :main_rolleyes: Wish it was that simple.

I havn't really studied boids other than balls all that much Benn. But I just don't see how these temps wouldn't effect the burms. I know I had a few balls get RI and my house never got below 75 degrees when I kept them. I am curious to see what a few of the Big Boid breeders have to say on this..

I doubt the cold snap is going to have any impact on the nonnative snakes. Green iguanas are one thing, since they're primarily arboreal. Snakes, on the other hand, only have to find a burrow that goes a few feet underground to get to warmer, more stable temps. Heck, even a mound of rotting vegetation (such as an old gator nest) will do. Reptiles are better at surviving than you think. They've been doing it a lot longer than us mammals, after all.

Actually, I think it's debatable on whether or not Green Iguanas are native to Florida. But anyways, I agree, snakes are a bit better at surviving climate changes than sun-loving lizards like iguanas. Although I'm sure a few individuals might have problems being caught out, the majority will simply look for a warm, dark place to wait it out.
