Flying with a dog

I might as well show off my dog while I'm here :D

I have to go overseas to see ailing family and I wasn't planning on taking my dog. She's a sensitive dog, so she's more easily stressed in situations than my previous dog. And since the flight is 10 hours, it reeeally makes me nervous having her sedated where I can't see her for that long. So I had organized someone to take care of her. But now this woman has to go fix several situations with her family (her son wants to move in with his dad half-way across the country, her father is dying, her sister is in the hospital... I feel really bad for her.)

So I'm stuck with the dilema of whether to fly with her or not. I don't really have any other options.

I've only done this flight once with my other dog and I was only 12, so I don't really remember it very well. So if anyone else has, I just need to hear from people who might have done this. Is it as stressful to get your dog onboard as I'm imagining it to be?

If you do, you need a health certificate. Also depending on the country they may or may not let her in without a quarantine depending on her rabies status. Check the laws involved and talk to your vet.

If you're not going to be gone very long (like, a few weeks) it will probably be easier to board her at a kennel. For longer, might be worth it. Check if they need a quarantine, though, because that's essentially boarding her anyway and most places require a month (or more?)

I may have found a friend in another city who could take care of her. I much rather drive 4 hours to another city and know she's safe than take her with me or leave her at a kennel. Last time I left a dog at a kennel she came back with all sorts of health problems, so I'm reluctant to do that again.

You definitely need to find out what the country's rules for bringing in a dog are. Some countries are very strict so it might not even be an option.

As far as I know, I think most of them do. Each one might have different rules about different things though but I think most allow dogs and cats.

Yup. Some dog "breeders" send their dogs on planes if you purchase from out of state. They also send reptiles through delta dash but its expensive.
