So I work at a petstore and we generally only have these two people feed the reptiles well it seems everytime I go over them I always find something that is wrong with them, well we have had this fat tail on the back wall for a while and he wasn't eating at all. Poor thing, finally I decided to take it upon myself to force feed him at least 3 crickets, well When I went to do this I think I found out why he wasn't eating, he had chunks of what looked like his jaw was coming off, and his lip all bubbled up, it looks like MAJOR mouth rot, horrible, terrible painful mouth rot, but I don't know what we are doing for him, it appears as if we aren't doing anything for him and it makes me upset.... I want to help him/her but I don't want to get in trouble either. Is their little things I could do to help the poor thing out without giving medication or anything like that?

it needs to see a vet if the place your working at can not care for any animal and leaves it in pain. they Must Take it too a vet. if not your store could get major Fines for not caring for the animal(s) from your local animal control or whatever you may have finds out..i don't believe you should sell a sick animal or show it to the Public in anyway till its better. i don't know about your laws. but i don't see why it would change. your better off telling your Super or the person you work under. then letting it go on.

trying to care for it on your own. might even make it worst.

from what you say it sounds like the poor little guy is done for.

best thing would be to take it to a vet (most likely for euthanization).

from the description you give it doesnt sound like there is much you can do for the little dude. just try to get him to someone who knows how to painlessly put him out of his misery.

Without veterinary intervention, the gecko will die. Mouthrot is usually a sign of another primary infection in the geckos GI system. Sometimes they respond well to antibiotic treatment.

Something you can do right now is to take a Q-tip and dip it in normal hydrogen peroxide, and then put a few drops of iodine on the wet cotton. Gently swab out the gecko's mouth, especially around the gums. Let it foam up in the gecko's mouth, and then using the other end of the Q-tip, wipe out the foam.

Keep in mind that refusal to provide veterinary care for an animal is not only cruel, but is against the law in many states.

I had a fattail with mouthrot I took her to the vet. They gave her a shot and removed the mouthrot and put some stuff on it (THE GECKO NEEDS TO SEE A VET ) it is not that much 35 to 40 bucks .

I know a private breeder of snakes that uses a Q-Tip and mouth wash to help with mouth rot. Now that being said...I dont know if its good for them but he seems to think it works. Which ive seen it work on small snakes he has had.

WHOA you guys hey I'm just as concerned about the little guy as well!

We take care of all our animals, if an animal shows the slightest bit of skiness we put in the back to be taken care of.

That's why I don't understand why we aren't taking care of this little one :(
If any of the animals have ANYTHING wrong, it's off to be taken care of. Maybe the owner knows something I don't about the little guy

Also I pretty sure we aren't moving this one from the room because to move it would cause stress and plus the qauriteen room is really cold, in the retile room it's always kept at 82 degrees farenheit

Please don't get made at me I'm the animal advocat as well. Why do you think I'm asking what I should do to help?

You should talk to you boss and take the gecko to the vet. I worked at a pet store for three years so I know what you are struggling with. If you dont do something the gecko will die. Its dosnt need to be put in a cold back room, it needs a doctor. Since it cant be sold like this anyway maybe try and see if your boss would let you have it and then you could take it to a vet. I know it is against the law for a store not to care for its animals, but if it is anything like here no one enforces it and the pet stores go unchecked. If you dont do something, who will?

I found out we are in fact treating him for his needs, but he seems to be getting worse is mouth is now to wear he can't open it :/ and it's all scabby and nasty poor thing, if only they had listened to me in the first place we probably oculd have caught it sooner.
Now we have a leo that I told them has mouth rot and she's in the quariteen room being taken care of, I'm happy for her.
