I've never had a moon pie either. :)

But on the serious side, I agree. There has been WAAAY to many unnecessary posts lately. Here are some that specifically annoy me.

Oh dear. :hmm:

read below

They will be leopard geckos.
On replying to a what will I get thread.

In case you've haven't noticed, these three members have been on a recent post surge. I am not trying to offend you in any way, again just stating facts. Please don't take this wrong. I am pointing out something wrong that you could try to fix. :)

Here is a graph to prove my point. Based on posts per day average in the last 15 days.

Data is from the last 15 days.

Another statistic: These 3 members have made up about 12% of our daily posts in the last 15 days.

Lastly, I am not trying to offend you or stop you from posting. Just think about what you post before you press 'Post Quick Reply'.

I completely understand that people getting their panties in a bunch goes in waves and a full moon certainly could have something to do with it. I know my gymnastics students were in rare form today. But I don't mind, because I expect childish/overly sensitive attitudes and tattle-taling from 6 year olds. I don't expect this from a forum of adults and teenagers. So...

Please stop making arguments personal and please stop reporting posts just because you don't like what the person said if it does not break the TOS.
If the moon is making everyone extra cranky or sensitive then it's time to step away from the computer. I would like to, I am extra cranky thanks to an ear infection, but I can't because I keep having to deal with reported posts. So for the sake of all of the moderators wanting to keep our sanity, let's chill out for a while.

Thanks for posting this. I guess the moon does have some effect, as I have been a bit stressed out these past few days. Time to cool down...

Sorry to necro this but it feels relevant again...

IF SOMEONE IS POSTING A THREAD ASKING FOR HELP WITH THEIR GECKO AND YOU DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER, DON'T FREAKING POST, IT'S THAT SIMPLE. I'm sick of seeing posts (by one user in particular) telling people to "do more research" or "read Leopard Gecko Manual" or something. That is NOT helpful to someone who has a specific question that, in fact, is not covered in that book! It just discourages newbies from asking important questions that require the opinion of a more experienced keeper because they see this other newbie being put on blast for asking something. Annoying.

Certain questions that have been asked over and over and over tend to wear thin on the people who have answered them over and over and over. Perhaps it's not covered in a book, but I can almost guarantee that 98% of the questions asked here on this forum have been asked before and answered before. Over and over and over.

This forum has a 'search' function, and although it isn't perfect it certainly can bring up several threads/posts on a particular question or topic. Some people are just too lazy to do any research and would simply rather ask their question and have the answer handed to them. Since this seems to go on quite a bit, it's no wonder that we are seeing amateur and ambiguous answers.

I agree that ALL of us started out as newbies, and we ALL have asked our share of redundant questions. But some of us have been working with reptiles since before the internet, and we had to learn to get information the hard way... by not only asking questions, but by doing our research. This day in age with the plethora of information available on the internet, and forums like this, if we all first attempted to find the answers by utilizing the 'search' function on this site, we wouldn't be inundated with with so many repetitive questions.

I haven't answered many questions of any kind the last few days, but I have told people to do more research and to buy books as generalizations. I'll do it again in the future too. There are a few reasons for it really.

The first and simplest is because everyone should always seek out more and better information. All the time. Always. Read more, learn more, understand better, gain experience and knowledge... these are positive things that all herpers, all people, should strive towards.

The second reason has a lot to do with context. Some people ask some questions that are difficult to answer properly without explaining the underlying and/or related concepts. A common example, "What morph would I get by crossing (gecko one) with (gecko two?" It could just be answered directly but a better and more thorough answer would require explaining Mendelian genetics (so they can build their own punnett squares), the physiology of color and pattern so they know what pigments are and the traits of reptile skin, touch on the relationship of temperature and diet as they relate to phenotype and finish it all up with a meaningful analysis of the ethics and responsibilities that are associated with breeding and probably some details on the economics of the pet reptile market. These are things that anyone asking that kind of question should also know and it's an enormous amount of information to stick in a response on a message board. Teach a man to fish and so on*

Third, though related to the second, sometimes the questions that are asked or the way they are asked can raise doubts (or make obvious) other areas of knowledge that the questioner lacks. Sometimes they ask questions and make statements which make it evident that they are very new, very inexperienced and have large gaps in information they really need to know. They ask a question about behavior, but the way they ask it makes it clear that they don't understand nutrition or heating. Oftentimes questions are raised about the health and safety of their practices as pet owners. Again, it becomes a scenario where answering their question in a way that is meaningful would require providing a comprehensive education of the fundamentals. Something best accomplished through another venue. It's not a matter of the people responding to message board posts being ignorant of the answer, it's a matter of the volume and arrangement of the information required to answer the question well. The effort, the editing, the revision, the rewrites required to hone a book or a worthwhile web page into a quality source of information are far, far beyond the effort and attention given to any message board post ever written. Telling someone to go read a book; it's pointing someone in the best direction for the best answer.

Sometimes it is not always obvious when the person asking the question lacks the required background or context to use it properly until after an initial answer has been given. Which is why you will often see posts which first try to explain, then drop back to suggesting further reading.

When someone answers a question for someone else on a forum like this, they are shouldering a responsibility in becoming an educator. They are freely taking up the burden of acting as an informational resource, of offering to teach, to guide the understanding of another person. It means accepting some portion of culpability for what that person does with the information they have been given; when you tell someone to do something, or what something is, you are involved with all the repercussions and consequences of what they do with that knowledge. A short answer, accurate but incomplete, leaves room for misunderstanding or misuse, if it is even comprehended at all. A thorough answer is sometimes beyond the scope of the format the question is being asked in. The only other options are to direct them towards the answers where they exist ("do more research" "read this book") or to ignore them completely, despite the fact that they may end up inadvertently doing something unethical or unsafe.

Sometimes the answer people want is not the answer they need. So I've sometimes told people to go read a book. Done it before and I'll do it again. They should probably listen.

You're both right and I knew I'd receive responses like this, but the specific post which set off my rant was a question asked by someone which was very specific and required a specific answer from someone familiar with breeding geckos. It wasn't a husbandry question or a question of morph, it was related to behavior iirc (unfortunately this was a day or two ago and I can't recall which thread it was). Obviously the search function is a blessing for newbies that is not utilized enough, but in this particular instance I'm referring to people who either don't know the answer to the OP's question or don't care to answer it, but choose to up their post count anyways.
