My 6 year old twisted my arm & we now have 2 geckos in the home. This is Eba (once again named by a kid, without explanation of what "eba" is). We picked Eba up Friday evening. He has not eaten since we brought him home. Is this a normal stress reaction to the move. Any suggestions?

Here are a few pics of him/her. The last one is a bell shot. Is the dark area normal coloring (it almost looks like bruising)? Or could this be part of the not eating problem? Thanks for looking & your opinions. J

Cute, some advice

He looks a bit more then stressed. You need to get a fecal to the vet asap as he may have parasites. Keep him well away of your other gecko for at least 90 days. Wash hands after holding him. The color you are seeing is most likely internal organs. You are on the right track with the stress and sometimes they don't eat for a couple days. Don't leave crickets in his enclosure for more then 20 minutes. If he doesn't eat them remove & try the next day. Ideally meal worms, silk worms or even some wax worms in a dish in his enclosure would be good.
He looks like a nice gecko, good luck with him.

Thanks Joyce. I have been pulling out the food. I've tried mealies and crickets. He doesn't flinch at all for them. I haven't seen any voiding in the cage at all yet.

Yeah, that spot is just organs. You can see it on most leos until they get too fat. It has basicaly been 2... 2.5 days. Give it time. That is nothing to worry about. He is not deathly skinny that you need to take action right away. I do agree that you should get a fecal done, but I would agree with that even if he was eating. Give it a little more time and let us know.

Its a bit skinny in the tail but the overall body condition is just ok... I am sure with a little TLC and a fecal, it will be just fine... I would get a few wax worms into it for the first two feedings... That usually triggers a feed reaction and will give it some needed fat and protein intake...

Off topic, but I think the second photo with the reflection is AWESOME!!! I love the pic! The leo is very cute too! I like her coloring! <grin> Hang in there...I am waiting for Angel to eat, too. When she poops I plan to have her feces tested as well. It's a good idea to check them periodically...especially when you first get them! <grin>

You seem very comfortable handling your new leo...I can never get them at an angle to check their belly...how did you do it?

Be thankful you get cool names like Eba. We ended up with a "Mary" and "Alex" - named after some friends from school of our 5 year old ;)

the body doesn't seem overly thin for the age.. but somewhat thin. I would try varied types of food that were suggested already. One question you may want to find out is what it was feeding on before you bought it. But I've had some new ones that didn't eat for 6 days after getting to me so don't worry quite yet.

A fecal exam is definitely good idea to rule out parasites.. Your kids will be crushed if it passes away.

That is a nice Leo that you added to your expanded collection-be careful-these guys have a way of sneaking up on you and before you know it-you're up to 30 plus-lol
I would agree that with some TLC-he/she should do just fine and the fecal is a very good idea because of the relatively thin tail

Good Luck with your new baby
:D

PS- I love the name Eba

I'm already fearing the NH show in April. I've got my gecko fund jar going!

As for the possibility of my boys losing a gecko--I'm very straight up with them. They know that if the gecko is sick or is not treated properly & cared for it will die. A bit harsh, but necessary.

I am looking for a vet in my area, the fecal will be done...when it happens...still waiting.

Here are some links to help find a vet:

Do you know what the substrate was?

I agree a little on the thin side but that can be fixed with some worms. Definitely needs a fecal and do not let the kids handle this one until you know it is clear of parasites. You will need a second fecal in about 2-3 weeks, sometimes it can take a while for something to show up.
