How do breeders go about separating themselves from their beloved geckos?
I've been interested in breeding small scale for a while now, but one thing I'm having trouble coming to grips with is the possibilty of selling my geckos. The thought of them being mistreated makes me feel horribly responsible.

Do other breeders feel this way when they rehome a gecko? Maybe breeding isnt for me, as the majority would need to find homes.

I've fostered and rehomed many animals before with no problems, but the thought of creating something myself, and have its quality of life be anything less than I could provide isnt something that settles well.

In my case, once the entire house fills up with hatchlings, I"m more than happy to move them along. I enjoy making other people happy with them. I also have very "practical" attachments and have no trouble letting go. I enjoy the cycle of the year. When it's time for eggs to be laid, I'm really into increasing the population and when it's time to be selling, I'm really into decreasing the population.

I guess hatchlings would be slightly different for me because I dont 'know' them.
I have a few adults that I have no plans on breeding ever. It would be a good idea for me to rehome them, instead of buying more and more tanks...but its hard.

I have sold a few of my retired breeders. I find that I do get attached to some of the geckos that I "know" and won't sell them and others just don't move me. For instance, I sold "Ruby", a SHTCT I hatched my first breeding year in 2005. She has never particularly liked to be held and never warmed up to me. On the other hand, I will never sell Ivory, my Mack snow/fasciolatus cross or Oskar, my male super snow because I think they're gorgeous.

How do you guarantee that they are properly care for? My nightmare is selling one and the person keeping them on sand without belly heat because they have been misinformed.

You cant. You can try your best to educate them - but you cant ever know 100% if theyre going to listen to you.
