Gecko eye regeneration

So about 4 months ago I found my Leo with a big bite mark or something right behind one of her eyes. It was swollen up like a marble. So that weekend I went to completely clean out the cage and found a huge Beatle buryied in the sand. Must have hatched some time back from one of the mealworms. I also noticed her other eye was completely missing it was just a hole. The swollen eye had completely scared over and was also lost. Poor thing. Since then I have been hand feeding her crickets every night.

After a few molts her eye sockets were big holes. Tonight when I was feeding her I saw a reflection in the sockets. Upon closer inspection I found her eyes have grown back. They are still a little smaller and sunken but they are definitely growing back.

From everything I have read it didn't sound like eyes regenerate. Has anyone seen this before? Is it normal?

Someone did post a picture a few years ago of a baby gecko who seemed to have grown an eyelid after being born without one, so maybe more is possible than we think.

To my knowledge, gecko eyes do not regenerate. When they have eye infections, the swelling causes their eyeball to sink deep into the sockets. They are always there, just not visible until the inflammation goes down.

No I am not joking.

Thanks Golden Gate for the reply. I suppose this is possible but they would have had to be pretty deep in there. They looked pretty bad for a while. They got all crusty and hard.

Unfortunately I never expected them to grow back so I didnt take any pics when she was eyeball-less but here she is now.

Also please keep in mind, my post was not to inform anyone that this happened or joke about it, it was to seek answers for something I didnt think possible myself.

When Tom-Tom had the eye caps over his eyes, they looked really bad. Needless to say, he recovered & his eyes look very different compared to the others. They are a lot darker, super sensitive to light, and one even bulges out a bit. He "squints" a lot, and prefers his humid hide.

That could be similar to what happened with yours. When I first saw him after the shed came off I thought his eyes had sunken in, but they were just dark.

When leopard gecko eyes get crusted over with shed and/or infection, their eyeballs pull back into their skull. Self preservation. Once the eye is freed of the intrusion and properly hydrated, it pops back out like it should be. Your gecko never lost it's eyes, they were just not visible. Looks good now :)

Thanks for the photo.

Awesome, thanks, this is good info! I was very happy to see them too. I felt so bad when I thought she lost her eyes. I literally held each cricket in front of her until she ate it. Been doing that for 4 months now. She would snap at it but not always get it like she was blind.

While their eyes are healing from trauma, they are indeed blind and need help eating. Eventually they begin to see shadows, and progress from there. Hopefully your girl will regain most of her vision.

Sorry, but you mentioned her eye was completely missing and it was just a hole, sounded outragious and to think they regenerated eyeballs was impossible. Glad she is doing better tho.

I took in a gecko several years ago that had a missing eye and it does look similar. The horrible previous owner had housed it with a bearded dragon, resulting in an extreme injury. She had to catch her crickets on the side with an eye, the poor girl.
