My adult bell has always done this.
His favourite hide is a large rock originally used for breeding cichlids.
Hes in there all the time, and he poops in there.
Its gross. Its hard to clean.
Arent they suppost to be clean animals?

How is your tank setup? Usually when they find a place they want to defecate at, they'll always do it there. You could rearrange things in a way that he would defecate in a different spot. Or if he just really wants to do it inside that rock, find another suitable hide for him to lay in. It's possible that rock is what he prefers to hide in and he just hasn't found another optimal hiding spot.

Most of my geckos defecate on the warm side, so if that rock is the only rock you got on the warm side, it's probably why he's sleeping and defecating in there.

place some paper towel down on the floor of your set up (place hide on top), now its easy to clean. I have a couple geckos that do the same.

No he poops IN the rock. The rock is hard to clean, not the carpet.
He has 4 different hides, and two levels.
Ive tried switching hides, the only thing I havent tried is taking that particular hide away. I keep it because he seems to really like it. But he may get a new one if he keeps this habit up..

Katie, some geckos
can't stand the smell of fish.
Check to see if there is a dead cichlid in there.
Easy to clean poop from any rock...
use 1/4 stick dynimate in an open field.
Light...run like heck.
{Post is a try for humor.}
Take care. HJ

LOL!
Well, it was never used for fish, so this cant be the issue...maybe he thinks he IS a fish? They poop where ever they want.

I have a few babies I hatched this year that do that, and I tried the whole "move the furnature" around trick, and they all continued to poop in their hides. I guess they don't like pooping out in the open.

You can try taking it away, but probably the only thing he'll do is find another hide to poop in.
