Im planning on making some hide and water dishes out of air dry clay, mod podge(possibly glow in the dark) and some glow in the dark sand. Do you guys think this would annoy or irritate my leos?

I wouldn't think that the light coming off of the glow-in-the dark stuff would irritate your leo, since most of those only glow brightly for a few minutes and then fade before needing to be charged up again. Of course this is just speculation and would be highly dependent on how much of the area is glowing (i.e. a small area would be far less irritating than the entire background), the color of the glow (red vs. green), and if you intend on keeping the glow charged (i.e. blacklight). The concern that I would have is that the chemicals used to attain the phosphorescent effect might have an impact on the health of your gecko. If you are using these glow-in-the dark materials for the outer layers of your project, you will be directly exposing your pet. Also, I'm not sure about how safe air dry clay is. Hopefully someone has some experience with it and can help you with that. Good luck with your project, I'm sure your leo will appreciate it. :main_thumbsup:

You shouldn't be using sand as a substrate, most people on here use tile, I use repti carpet, your gecko could eat the sand and it can cause impaction which is a whopping vet bill for you. On another note, I have a glow in the dark water bowl in my geckos tank, she has had it for a while and it has caused no harm, but I bought mine from a petstore.

yeah i was thinking the chemicals could cause harm but wasn't sure and i do intend to have a black light on at night. The air dry clay is non toxic and i plan to seal it with mod podge. Thank you for your help.

i have tile in my enclosure's, i planned on using the glow in the dark sand to mix with the mod podge and paint on the hides and dishes so its easier for the geckos to climb and not be so slick.

ohhh I see! I would say as long as you seal it it will be fine. Like I said, my gecko has a glow in the dark water bowl that I bought from a pet store, and she has been fine using it for a long time now, and Im assume they made it with glow in the dark paint or something and just sealed it. If you do make it I'd like to know how it goes! goodluck :)

Now, im not sure how Black light effects leos, but its murder on Glofish(glow in the dark zebra danio). I dont think long term exposure to black lights is safe. Vision problems and possible immune problems may occur.

No problem, i remember i used to have Glo Danio and kept them under a black light tank. They all died slowly. Long term exposure to Black lights isnt recommended for fish, or for people so thats what im basing my assumption off of.

instead of a black light, a dark blue reptile bulb could be used and it will give an almost as bright of an effect on the glow in the dark decorations. and it won't burn as hot as a black light. which even a low watt one will get extremely hot.

I dont think the glow in the dark sand is a good idea. First sand is not a good substrate and I don't know about all the stuff they put in it to make it glow. The air dry clay(brands like sculpey) are fine IDK about the glow in the dark, but it should probably be ok. I hope you consider using a different substrate. Im glad you are trying to make your geckos life more fun! :)

sculpey isn't an air dry clay at all. :/ it's an oven bake clay that is oiled based. and they said they were going to be gluing down the sand.

if using sculpey glow in the dark it takes more working with to soften and you must shape it fast, it cools off quickly from the body heat from your hands and then crumbles.
