I don't even want to turn on the news-all they show is water flooding the coast. I did read that the surge was possibly breaching the Louisiana leeves as well-any one have word on that?
Mel- What kind of dogs do you have?

Marlo, I haven't heard about much for Louisiana. Since the direct hit is going to be right at Galveston Bay most of the water is funneling up the bay and ship channel so I don't know how much it will affect LA. I'm sure they'll get normal heavy rain type flooding in areas that normally flood but I haven't heard anything about the levees being breached.

Those would be a Long Haired Chihuahua and an English Bulldog hunkered down on the bed with me. LOL

Well I hadn't heard about levees being breached, but I just did a quick search and found that some are being topped and that some areas that are not protected by levees are getting flooded. Also it says the surge could get up to 10 feet on the east bank of the Mississippi and could get that high in southernmost St. Tammany parish, which is close to where I am (I'm in the parish right next to it), but I'll be ok (I think!). Still...that's bad if it does reach that parish.

I'm sure there is more info on that, but that's just what I discovered...hope that no levees collapse. I also read that they closed the floodgates on the 17th street canal, which is the one that collapsed in Katrina.

Ah...the stress of hurricanes.

Hope everyone is still remaining safe! I saw a picture of people in Galveston walking in nearly waist deep water!

You are correct about Ike causing levee failures in Louisiana. The surge has sent waters over some levees causing them to erode and fail. The winds have pushed water from the lakes into towns and residential areas.

Yikes! I guess we're only getting very local news. I hope you guys don't get too much water.

I think all the news is focused on you guys in Texas! And there's nothing wrong with that of course :). I feel like they left the N.O. area of Louisiana in the dark news wise about Ike...or maybe I just haven't been paying attention to it, lol! But I'm not on the southshore, so I'm not as concerned as those that are, are.

Where are you located in LA? Out of curiosity.

I'm in Gonzales, and we're getting a great deal of wind tonight. I'm glad that I finished taking down the leaning trees in my yard. If I hadn't, they might be banging into my house right now.

Glad to hear you guys made it thus far! I hope all the others in Texas and some of Louisiana made it through okay too.

They're saying 1-3 weeks for power right now. Over 2 million homes lost power so it may take a while. I just hope we're able to get gas for the generator if we run out. I think we'll make it though! The neighbors on both sides say our roof started to lift at the corners, kinda scary. I guess new roof just moved to the top of our to do list.

holy crap Mel! Glad you guys made it through that *hug* been watching it on the news for the past 24hrs

my step-mom's mom stayed, she lives in a townhouse over close to the Galleria area of Houston. She weathered it out, lost power, and since her townhouse is on the end she got hit the worst out of her little neighborhood, the entire side wall, or the bricks off of it fell and totaled one car and damaged two more. Her two windows on that side are broken out and she had a little box deal on one and she has no idea where that went. The rain was blowing in and has ruined her carpet, so she's just been mopping up water all day. I haven't heard anything in a while, so I hope she's alright. She does have her neighbors there though, they all stayed. She has friends that live on Galveston Island, and we're not even sure if their house is still there, they did evacuate though so thank goodness they didn't stick around for a front row seat.

I'm in Frisco (northern part of Dallas) staying with my dad and step-mom, Kaida is here with me since she had a vet visit today (which went well and she has a 100% clean bill of health) and it's probably a good thing she's with me since where I live back in Scroggins (south of Mt. Vernon on I-30) is getting drenched right now! I think the center of circulation, what's left anyway, is passing to the east or so of that area. I have no idea if there's much wind damage going on or if it's just rain, I think it's just rain because we saw wind speeds and it looks like Dallas is getting higher winds now, I hope that's true. I have no idea if the power is out out there or what, I just hope my German Shepherd is alright, he had to stay behind, but he has the whole covered front porch to himself and his doghouse that sits on the porch, so hopefully he'll be alright. I told him to get out of the way if any trees started to fall, so hopefully he'll listen if something like that happens. Gotta check with A&M Commerce too, since the campus looks like it's getting a ton of rain too.

Anyway, hoping you guys are still doing well down there in Houston *hug* stay safe

Mel, keep us updated as you can ok. Hopefully the roof damage is not as bad as it might be, once you get a look at it.
Stangwolf-why'd you have to leave your shepard? I hope he's alright. Is he microchipped? We haven't heard from our family yet either.

well my dad said that it'd be best for him to stay since he had shelter there, our neighbors are there, and if he'd have come to Frisco with us then he'd have been outside in the rain (he's an outside dog and doesn't like to be inside for long periods of time - I have no idea why I figured he'd love being inside but I've tried to let him in on occasion and he's cool for a little bit but then starts pacing and whining and wants back outside). Plus the dog that we have here in Frisco, Jake (he's a lab mix), gets territorial, and we have two cats here in Frisco and AJ's killed a cat that I tried to keep before (so no cats for me). So yeah...I guess it was just better if he stayed there.

Our neighbors did say that things back there are good, the wind blew for about an hour and it rained a lot but other than that they said things look good. Evidently the power didn't even go out.

He is micro-chipped (all of our animals are, well except the gecko) and even if we had one of our trees fall on the fence I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have gone anywhere. I don't know that for sure, but he's a mamma's boy bad and I've seen him in storms he is like glued to his doghouse and the front porch.

I felt bad leaving him but my dad said that he'd be alright, so yeah :( I'm glad he's alright and that it didn't get as bad as we thought it might. I know those are all pretty much excuses but I don't know, we were just trying to do what we thought was best I guess, for all of our animals.

Marlo: hope your family is alright, I know my step-mom would be going crazy right now if she hadn't been able to reach her mom.

OMG the roof was lifting!

I am very happy to hear even seems to have "HUNKERED DOWN" and "weathered the storm" well.

Stay safe and hopefully the electric man knows you are famous and gets your power back sooner;)

The good news is that cellular signals have been getting stronger. There's been a big problem with the signals jamming so people who couldn't get through to their family and friends yesterday might be able to get through today. Hopefully we can get more gas for the generator tomorrow. For now the stations are closed or empty. I feel bad for Houston, they don't have water and they had rain all morning and flooded again. A cool front is moving through this afternoon so that should ease the pain for a lot of people who weren't as prepared. I think our geckos are confused since it's been dark for so long! LOL
