I bought a new gecko but I also have another geko, need advice
The first gecko I bought is about 3 or 4 months old and I don't know the sex, and the gecko I bought today I have no idea if it is female or male. The guy at the pet store said it does not matter, really because the same sex gecko can fight, or even the opp sex can fight, that what he said. I now have two leppard geckos, that I know for sure and both very small. I hope they get along, no problems so far, then I only had a few hours and their babies. How do I know to remove them, what signs do they show if they are not compatable? I really hope I don't have the same sex geckos. I read not a good idea but guy at pet store said it does not matter, they even had a fat tailed gecko in with Leppoard geckos. I thought that was a no no but he said there was no problem. If they are babies and get along, will they get along when they are older if they grow up together as babies?

Pet stores are NOT breeders/keepers of reptiles. They often give incorrect information and advise. Leopard Geckos and Fat-tail Geckos should not be housed together. Leopard Geckos housed together must have adequate space, and be about the same size. Oler, more dominant geckos will bully smaller and less agressive geckos.

I am a firm believer that they do much better housed individually.

I have plenty of space and they are about the same size, one is a little bigger but not by much, they are both very tiny. I would not house a lepoard gecko with a fat tailed one, cause I read not to. I am just wondering since I don't know if they are male or female, what is going to happen.
The Gecko I bought is pretty Gecko though, the one I have is orange with black spots and the other is brown with back stripes, so if one is female, or male, not that i know I wonder what their babies will look like, then again they both could be female for all I know, then they be lezbians

Most often it's too late before you notice that they don't get along. Often times you'll find some injuries... Or even a dropped tail. It's much safer to house them separately than to risk any injuries now or in the future.

Also, separating them will be beneficial in case they are of the opposite sex. ;)

Since these geckos were also not purchased at the same time, you are running a risk of introducing parasites or even diseases to your first gecko. Quarantine is very important... Especially when buying from a petstore where you have no idea where your geckos have come from and what they have been exposed to.

It may seem like a hassle to house them in two separate cages, but it is well worth it.

Well if they are opposite sex they can actually breed at a very young age so it is important to find out what sex they are. So your girl does not get pregnant at a young age.

The reason I bought another gecko is true I wanted another one but to also keep my gecko company when I can't always be around, so that is why I want them in the same cage. I will keep a close watch on them for a few days to make sure. The pet store I bought them from are clean and they both look very healthy. I will house the both of them but if they have problems then I will have to sep them, so far they are being cool together, hope it last. Thanks for your help.

How can I tell the sex of my gecko's? Does anyone know? I also read they only breed in the spring and right now it's getting close to winter.

:( I'm afraid you've been misinformed. Geckos are not social creatures, they do not need companionship. Some tolerate companionship, but they honestly do not need it...

Also, geckos will breed when the female starts ovulating and when the male is capable of reproduction. It isn't something that is completely set in stone... Although there is typically a season, it does mean that geckos can't breed out of that.

If you have pictures, someone might be able to guess... But they do sound too young to know for sure... That's why it really would be better to house them separately, or if the tank is large enough, divide it for now.

I agree if you can get pics it would really help. Although it does sounds like they are too young.

I will get pics in a few days. I want my new Gecko to get comfortable with new home and his or her new gecko friend. I will have my boyfriend help me, and I will get the pics up very soon. Right now my new gecko is hiding behind water dish but my other gecko is just minding his business. I think the other might be male but no I don't know that for sure but he keeps winking at me. :main_laugh:

Well... from what I know, females normally won't fight each other. If they are to males, then they will fight to the death. They are extremely territorial. My friend accidently put two of her males in the same cage instead of putting one of the males with his females, the attacked each other and a female lost her tail. It was a terrible battle.

It's really hard to tell if they are male or female when they are young, but when they get older, you can tell if you have the eye for it. There are some differences, but I can't find the picture that I had on sexing leos atm. Sorry.

Well I walked into the bed room and found both of them fighting and I thought ok, need new cage, so I got one, now they are separated. My one gecko almost hurt the other one and I did try to break up the fight, like they were rolling around going at it and the other one squeaked because my other gecko bit it hard. I had to separate the children. My question is will I ever be able to try to see if I can put them 2 together again, or should this never be done, since they fought like that? It's fine now they are not in same cage.

Gecko fight

I mean after the gecko fight they went their separate ways in the cage. However I have them in different tanks now.

I don't think you should reintroduce them. They really should be housed separately (I understand that they are now) and quarantined.

I know you seem dead set on having them together, so maybe you could wait until they are sexable... If they are both females you could try again... But then you need to be careful and watch for any signs of aggression.

Please don't take it that I'm trying to be hard on you, I'm just giving you some advice. :) It's really better for your leopard geckos if they remain housed separately.

I completely agree with Marcia, housing Leos individually is the best way. We did an experiment a while back and housed several adult females (same size) in a 45G tank. With only one hide on the warm side, they all piled on top of each other in it. With one hide for each of them on the warn side, they each picked their own hide and went to the same one everyday. You'll see, they'll do great housed separately.

What do you mean by sexable? As babies can't I tell if female or male, or you mean I have to wait to tell? I am just confused. Yea I am going to wait awhile, then try it again but I will wait awhile before I do. The one is not eating, the gecko I bought yesterday. My other Gecko eats like a pig and still does. :main_laugh:

You cannot sex a gecko at a young age because the male may not have developed a bulge behind the vent. They also have pores in front of the vent. Its not really a set time when this becomes noticeable because all geckos develop differently.
