Help!! Blood in defecation!!

Ahhh!!!

So i woke up this morning, and I noticed blood everywhere in Salazar's cage! It came from a rather large defecation in the middle of the cage, and it was obvious that she sat in her water dish to help her get it out, because there was blood in there, too! There are no rips or tears in her flesh.

I just started feeding her mealworms, and they never used to be a problem, but idk what else it could be. I gave her a warm bath, and she prompty defecated more blood about 5 minutes later. She did it again about 5 hours later.

She's un-responsive, and she's not moving around at all.

I don't have any idea of WHAT'S going on, let alone how to help her. Any ideas?

I am so sorry, but she may have internal bleeding. Did you recently drop her? Could she have fell of of somewhere in her cage? If she has internal bleeding I dont think much can be done If she isnt too far gone maybe some water will help with the blood lost. Keep us updated on how she's doing.

Yikes! When I first got my 2 year old female, Kobe, a few months ago she was only used to a cricket diet. I started giving her superworms and then she had blood in her poops (nothing like you are describing though). I stopped the superworms and no more blood. I would keep up with the warm soaks and lay off those worms. If this goes on more than one day, off to the vet.

didn't drop her, although that's a good idea. Plus, she's really hearty for a gecko, and she's been through a lot. I know why the blood was everywhere; cause she was walking around in it. I unfortunately can't afford a vet, and my parents (who would be funding the venture), said to just watch her and hope for the best! Ugh, it's infuriating! I feel so helpless.

I've been giving her warm baths, but i have a feeling that she shouldn't have too much stress on her, because of her condition. 2 baths a day seems ok i guess. I hate it when they get sick.

I really don't know what to tell you but it doesn't sound to good, you have to try your best to get to a vet. I had a gecko go off eating for like a few days i thought it was normal then saw blood in her poop less then a week later she was dead. I was willing to take her to the vet but she died before the appointment.

It doesn't sound good for your gecko, I'm afraid. I'm sorry, but one of the important factors in keeping any animal is to be able to afford veterinary care for them, and this sounds like it is definitely a case for a qualified vet. ((hugs))

I spoke to a online vet and they said that it was probably one of the following: "The white tongue indicates internal bleeding, shock, a heart problem, or other serious problems."

Long story short, this is not good. I'm calling a vet tomorrow, parents be damned, and we'll see what they can do for her. I doubt there's much, but I know if it's surgery, I can't help her. Gah this is frustrating.

The best of luck to you and your gecko friend! Hopefully you can find a vet that will see her tomorrow and at least give you an idea of what is going on and some options. At the very least, if she is suffering and in a great deal of pain, they could humanely euthanize her. I hope it doesn't come to that, but her comfort is the most important thing. Please keep us updated.

i just feel so bad that I couldn't do anything for her. She was in obvious pain, and I couldn't do anything about it. This is really heart-wrenching.

Anyway; thank you for the kind words and thoughts. I'm going to see if I can get he cremated tomorrow, and I'll take it from there. Thanks guys.

:main_angry: i guess some of us just shouldnt have pets cuz we are not rich enough... :main_thumbsdown: i think its important for people to have pets... even if they cant drop 100 bucks at a moments notice... i know we cant afford any vet bills right now... i guess we are unfit to have pets? *shrug*

Bill, it's part of the responsibilities that come along with pet ownership. It is important for people to have pets but it's not fair to the pet if the owner cannot provide necessary health care.

MorganaMoonstone, I'm so sorry you had to go through this, losing an animal that way is heartbreaking. Maybe you could speak to the vet about doing a necropsy to find out what happened. Perhaps there's something everyone can learn from this tragic loss.
