I know this is a way off comparison but here goes..lol.. Growing up in TX and being around and raising cattle, I have seen a couple hermaphrodites. It is a very rare occurrence in cattle, as well as humans. I am pretty sure that it could happen with leopard geckos. I mean why not, it can happen to everything else..lol.. Just throwing that out there.. Who knows, I could be WAY off.. But you have to remember, its not always just "boy or girl".. Sometimes in nature, its both in one package.. Being that the gecko shows no anal pores but shows hypenial bulge "holes". Could just be a bulgy female or a male whos anal pores havent showed quite yet.. Could be you have the first captive bred hermaphrodite leopard gecko..lol.. I guess time will tell..

there is already a hermaphrodite leopard gecko, its split down the middle from nose to tail tip. one side has one pattern and sex organ, the other side has a completely different pattern and opposite sex organ. i'm really trying to get pics from my friend who knows this breeder.

Awesome.. I would love to see that.. Very interesting how nature can throw curve balls at times..

That's not nature tho, this is selective breeding so it is creation on OUR terms not natures.

To the OP... my inexperienced eye for some reason says male. I was under the impression that seeing pores there indicated (or at least pointed towards) male, but like Maia said both sexes have pores so...

The "holes" that Maia is talking about are the two below the vent on the sides of the tail.

Pores are a male thing, plain and simple. What is not so simple is us identifying whether they are really pores or not.

To the hermaphrodite thing... wasn't there something in Tremper's book about a side-by-side split gecko? I'm gonna try to find it and report back. Everybody hang on... :p

Found it. It's on page 185. I didn't get for certain that he was saying it had both sex organs though. He may have been saying that females only have one ovary and males would be assumed to have only teste. Anybody get a different vibe from it than me?

Sure is a funky looking gecko though.

well normal females have two ovaries and normall maes have two testes. the one in trempers book he says has one of each. so hermaphrodite i guess? lol.
weird looking thing though.

That's just the thing, I'm not certain he is saying that the animal in the picture has both sex organs. I thought he might be saying that that particular deformity would have one teste if it was male. I'm gonna go read it again...

Alright, "Gynandromorph" means possessing both male and female characteristics, so I guess that question is answered. :) I still wonder how or if they know it is both male and female. He used the word "probability" after saying that it visually sexes female. If it produces one egg, visually sexes female, how do you know it has male sex organs at all?

I think it would be highly sketchy to breed that thing. Other than scientific reasons to see if stuff like that can, it would be irresponsible on a grand level, IMO.

Plus he says they can't. :)

#1- "Shim" is frikn' funny.

#2- Further over-examination of the tiny information in the book about this gecko shows me that Tremper is saying that Gynandromorphs in general cannot reproduce, not that the one in the picture can't, so it's not saying that they tried breeding that one. Also, the fact that it only produces one egg at a time doesn't necessitate breeding. It could have laid duds.

However, I'd be perty dang surprised if they didn't give it a go just for curiosity sake.

my gecko or trempers shim?

Hi Robin- I was referring to your gecko, if it's "package" is deformed in someway, would you still breed it, or just keep little "Hermie" (short for hermaphrodite;):main_laugh:) as a pet. Just wondering, b/c it doesn't look like perfectly normal gecko genetalia to any of us...so if something isnt perfect, we dont breed it right?:main_rolleyes:

considering the size of the gecko i do not think there is anything wrong with its undercarriage. if anything this one is just a little too small to sex, not to mention i am legally blind which hinders my ability to see all its junk all the time. in a couple of weeks i will be able to tell for sure.

p.s. if it was a shim no i would not breed it
