I think that a lot of the people that work at Petco just don't know how to properly care for a lot of the reptiles. The other animals(rabbits, rats, fish) are relatively easy to care for because I think a lot of people have common knowledge about them. There are far less people who have such common knowledge about leos and other geckos because each species has their own different care needs as opposed to rabbits or guinea pigs whose care is all pretty generalized.

The employees just don't have the knowledge to properly care for them. I admit that some of the neglect is just iresponsibility and that lack of knowledge is not an excuse for some of the Petcos poor care of the animals. But you have to admit it contributes a lot.

As far as buying animals from them, I think that if you have the space, money, knowledge, and time to care for it, and if the animal is living in less than favorable conditions as it is, why not give it a better home? I understand this doesn't necessarily apply to the ones who could have parasites(or are in such bad condition that you would have to spend tons of money on vet bills), but if you have the power to give the little guy or girl a better chance at life, who could pass that up? Plus some of the petcos have really nice color morphs for low prices. I bought a baby from them who turned out to be a shtctb(and a nice one at that) for just $25.
