Hi everyone, just came from a fish forum, and im a prodominantly a fishey person, but still love reptiles, i have a corn snake named oscar and then im getting 3 leopard gecko two snows and i forgot the other morph tomorrow...

Their all female going into a 40 gallon exoterra tank.

Im wandering if when their larger can i use black diamond blasting sand as substrate instead of play sand? I know the black diamond sand is ok in fish tanks but not sure in terrariums. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to GF. If the geckos you're getting are babies, please don't use sand. If they're adults, please also consider not using sand (though if you have to, play sand is best). I keep mine on ceramic tile and it looks pretty good.

Thanks :)

so you suggest not using sand at all? Even as adults? Ok if that's best, I use a green fake grass matt thing lol, I'll just keep using them for mah geckos, getting them today, I'll post pics :)

O another question will an under the tank heater work or do they also need like a red light bulb on top as well?

I also know I'm supposed to always have calcium in the tank right?

And if you use a tub aware for a moist hide, can it cut them with the sides?

Welcome to GF! It is great to see new people open to advice :) You will want to have Under Tank Heat (UTH) with a hot spot of 90-95 degrees. NO LIGHTS!

Some people leave calcium in the tanks 24/7 while others only dust on feeders. If you do leave calcium in the the tubs 24/7 I would recommend a small amount of calcium without D3 in a bottle cap.

I suggest putting your hole for your moist hide on top. That way the gecko/s will not kick out the substrate from the moist hide. If the moist hide is to tall for a baby or small juvie gecko than you can use drift wood or a small rock as a step or ramp to the moist hide top.

Good Luck!

Whats D3?

And my UTH has the hotspot set at 94 degrees so i think im good there.

And yea i was planning to cut the top, but they cant cut themselves right?

D3 just a type of Vitamin D. Stores make "calcium with D3" and "calcium without D3".
For leaving inside the gecko cage, you use "calcium without D3".

Usually, the plastic edges are not so sharp on a hide. If you are worried, you can use sand paper or a nail file to smooth the edges.

I don't have any experience housing multiple geckos together, as I've heard that it can be difficult for them to get along depending on temperament. You might have better luck posting the question in the Leopard Gecko Housing forum:

I keep 1.2 or 0.3 together most of the yeara and it works well. You do have to be prepared for geckos not getting along, so you'll need back-up tanks until you see how it's going to be.

Hello. Congrats on the gecko! I was wondering if you could post or send me a picture of how you're doing your moist hide? Is it a plastic Tupperware type container? Thanks!
