Id like to hear from someone who has their hovobator hooked up to their herpstat.i have 2 hovobators hooked up to my herpstat.First off i unwound the temp setting key all the way out so the hovo reads 100 degrees.I then plugged my 2 hovos into the herpstat and put my herpstat probe and another seperate digital probe in also.I then have my herpstat set for 81 deg but for some reason my incubator doesnt go to 81 it stays @ 82.5-83 degrees. My herpstat never comes on because my temp in the incubator never dips below 81.Any suggestions on why my hovobator doesnt stabilize @ 81

Roger, it could have to do with the ambient room temp. If the room is warm enough the thermostat won't turn the heat on. Hobovators are notorious for heating up too much. We have ours in the coolest room in the house for that reason.

Got your PM but I don't really have any ideas for you on this one. I have only used the built-in thermostat, my room was stable enough that I didn't need a better one.

How close together are your temp probe and your herpstat probes? If they're in different parts of the incubator then they may be measuring different temps. What happens if you turn your herpstat down to 79? When I was using a hobovator with a Big Apple Herp thermostat I kept the two probes very close together and turned the thermostat up or down based on the thermometer reading rather than the thermostat dial.

What I think comes to play more then anything else when it comes to a thermostat and a thermometer is that their all not calibrated exactly the same. My herpstat can read 84.5 degrees but at the same time my thermostat reading 83.7 degrees. I even have 2 of the same model of thermometers and with both being placed side by side they even read differently. They read pretty close to each other tho. The manual that come with the herpstat says the accuracy is +-.9 degrees so this comes into play also.

Also you can calibrate some digital thermometers if they have a reset button. If they don't, You can at least put your thermometer end in a cup that is filled with crush ice then with water to see if your's read 32 degrees. As long as the water in the cup reaches freezing point then you should be able to tell if your thermometer is accurate or of by how much. You can at least see if it's your thermometer or not and only takes 5-10 minutes.

Also make sure that all the holes are tapes up on the hova if you haven't yet. They are not needed.

the two probes are together on a deli cup in the hovo.i did try to set the herpstat at 79.once the herpstat fell below that mark both the thermostat kicked in and the hovo light came on.but during the time the hovo light is on the temp dropped to 77 which is not what i want.then the hovo light goes off and the hovo begins to heat up to 83.5

This is an excellent suggestion. My ex was a pro HVAC person and that is actually how they callibrated their equipment.

If the set-up is the right way when the hepstat kicks on then the hova should kick on. When the herpstat kicks off the the hova should kick off also. What I am thinking is that herpstat may be too much for the hova and it is warming up too much before it shuts off. If I was you, I would try the hova without the herpstat. Set the temps with the dial based on your thermometer. It may come out that it is more stable or just as. Also make sure all the holes are taped up and a zip lock bag of water or two on the bottom. Hope this helps.
