Feed it what it will eat. I only restrict mealies if the gecko is becoming unhealthy due to its weight.

The only reason I wouldn't feed with allotted time is simply due to the fact that a shy gecko will never get enough time to be comfortable enough to eat there fill. As long as their weight is healthy there is no need to limit their intake.

Eggzaktly. And if you're feeding in a container that keeps them from escaping, where are they gonna go? Trust the wisdom of the gecko...

I usually just put 12 mealies in an escape-proof dish and leave it in overnight. I feed my adults every 2nd day only.
