i have nearly 200 leos so its not as much as i would like, but i do get each of them out when cleaning and hold each one. it lets them get more used to handling, and also allows me to visually inspect them for any problems. im in my gecko room every day at least two or three times, and there are a few that i will spend more time with. if they are skittish at all i try to handle those more. every time im in there checking for eggs, watering, feeding, etc., i at least pick each one up.

I handle all my geckos(leos=32, cresties=3, gargs=3) daily. Some for a hour or so some for 5-10 as there still new and not tame or babies. I have a male who sits with me(like now) while on on the computer and just chills on my shoulder. He's so sweet. He's one if you let him he'd be out all day no problem. He's been to the pet store and the post office and such8D i dont like havin them cooped up in there tanks even tho they ahve more room in them then tubs. I likes having my animals out with me8D

i was actually thinking about this the other day. I was wondering how often leos should be held for...

i used to handle mine everyday but i'm at college a lot during the day now. If i handle her every weekend? ( around the same time, evening probs) will she get used to being handled and chill out, instead of going on a mission and exploring :D ??

To everyone who has them out for 15min to a hour; Where do have them sit? The longest I have had my girl out is around 15 min, but would like it to be longer. As soon as I put her on my desk she was flying all over the place! I did notice that she loves to crawl on me when I don't have a shirt on. She loves the natural body heat. Each time I try and keep her out longer to get her accustomed to me, and my living space.

Do your leos stay still when out that long?

My girls still young and jumpy so she won't sit still very much. I just sit on the couch and put a square pillow on my lap. I let her walk on that and just put my hand out when she wants to wak off of the pillow, she will walk onto my hand and I will then place her back on the pillow. I might also let her climb all over my hands for a bit or let her explore beyond the pillow.

She is starting to get the point that I want her on the pillow. Another good method is putting up a hand wall if they walk farther then you want them to.

Bottom line is if you want to hold your leo longer, you will just need to dedicate the time and hope they will calm down and sit still eventually.

There are 3 kindsa a geckos. The one that likes being handled and will sit happily on you, the You can touch me and i wont bite but id rather be exploring, then the you touch me and i bite. Basically anyways.

It depends on the geckos. Your girl is a adult and not used to full on handling. It'll take time for her to get used to you. Babies take anywheres from 2 weeks to 6 months to get used to hanlding for more then a little while. Sabi my male who'll go with me is super tame. At a young age i started handling him. Like as soon as I got him ._.; He was my first leo and i couldnt wait. But then he was always a nice baby. His counterpart, Komodo, on the other hand was a real handful. took a year to say he was tame enough not to bite._.; Just interact with her is the best ya can do. Hold her for 15 minutes for like a month see if she settles down. Most do but she just maybe a "id rather explore" type. I know i have a few like that.

:) mines the exploring type! she will be held and is friendly.. but would rather go on a mission on the sofa or she likes to sit near my neck :D i don't know why.. its not particularly warm there or anything :S .I would really love it if she would sit there and relax soo i could handle her while watching TV or something.

is there a limit on how much you should handle them? ...can you handle them throughout the day/night? or just once a day/night?

should you handle them in the evenings soo not to disturb their sleep during the day?

I used to handle my geckos a lot more but I have became more busy and decided that they don't particularly need to be handled so I will take them out once every 2 weeks to once a month.

With this I have to ask when do you handle them? Is there any particular time thats better or worse? Do you handle them right after they eat? Do you wake them up and get them out of their hide to handle them during the day? Do you wait until night and they are out of their hide to handle them?

Thanks!!!

Hmm... I usually get them out every other day or so, and usually about 10 min a piece. They are both the exploring type, one more than the other, but are generally pretty calm. I'd let them explore a bit more, but there are so many nooks and crannies that they could get lost in that I generally don't let them out of my hands or on rare occasion when I let them climb over me, off of my person.

Oh and the time is always in the evening when they are already awake, I don't wake them up unless I have to.

I usually take my male out a few times a week, and handle him for about 5-10 minutes, but lately he has been really aggressive with me, like hissing and such.
My female isn't hand tame but i'm working on it.
