Someone recently told me if you put a light fan blowing over your cricket container they will stay quiet because they don't like the wind on their wings. Anyone heard of that before or tried it? Think I may try it tonight because even though my house is 3 levels and they are in the basement omg are they LOUD!!

The only way I know to do it is to get 3/4" crickets who are too young to make noise. My house sounds like a campground all the time (from the crickets who got older before they got eaten).

I do get the 3/4 for my adult leos and 1/4 for my hatchlings but have other herps that eat the full sized. I hate it when one escapes, without fail they ALWAYS go behind the furnace where I can't catch them and just chirp away for a week or two lol

Putting a fan on crickets sounds messy... like cricket poo blowing everywhere!

my solution... feed a staple of worms and only buy small quantities of crickets and feed them off within a day or so of purchase(I let them eat a gut load overnight then feed them the next day)

I hate crickets! They smell and are so much more work than worms. Not to mention I have nightmares from cleaning the cricket cages at the pet store I used to work at. Every week I cleaned the cricket cages for 6 months straight(usually was the newbie job and I had this job the longest anyone had ever had because we had no new hires!). There were 3 29 gallons with a few thousand large crickets in each as well as a large bin with thousands of large crickets, 2 15 gallons with a few thousand small crickets in each, a 2.5 gallon with a few hundred pin head crickets, a small critter keeper with a maybe a thousand 1/8" crickets, and a 5 gallon with a couple thousand 1/4" crickets in it. Yeah I developed an allergy to cricket dust/poo lol. Not to mention when the crickets came in wet or some idiot put the cardboard on top of the cricket quench then the maggots would come and that was really pleasant to clean...

OK sorry for the rant! I feel better >_<

haha I don't know if there is a way to get them to shut up, they used to drive me insane!! We eventually ended up putting them under the sink so we could close the cabinet and you could still hear them if you were in the hallway. Did I mention I really don't like crickets??? :D

I think i know how to solve your problem, get rid of them and thats exactly what i did a few years ago. There just too annoying to deal with for me so i switched to roaches, there 100 times better then crickets in they dont make noise, breed quickly, live forever ;) and can be gut loaded better (bigger stomachs then crickets

Purchase smaller amounts and smaller sized crickets so that they never reach the adult phase to chirp, feed off the males first and then females, or switch feeders.

I think that the fan would be a possible idea as they normally stop when they notice your presence when they are chirping.

To catch escaped crickets there is no better trap than duct tape. I would rip 3-4 strips of duct tape and lay them sticky side up and over lap them slightly so they made a mat. Then I would fold about 1/2" of the side over to create a handle for myself and also allow the cricket to get on the mat more. Then for bait I would place a piece of carrot in the center of the mat. Place the mat along the wall and by heat producing appliances. I have successfully used these home made mats to capture almost all of my escapees.

I've bought 2 dozen large crickets and I haven't heard them chirp once. I feed the males first so maybe that will work for you.

ROFL I didn't mean blow the fan right on them, just a light breeze above their cricket box. I totally agree I HATE crickets, I breed superworms, mealworms and waxworms .. no noise, no mess, no stink and no escape artists!! But my geckos only eat waxworms on very rare occasion and won't touch the mealies or small supers at all. I also have other herps that eat supers but I also need crickets. I buy them 1000 at a time so picking out the males would be impossible lol

As dumb as it sounds the fan thing worked hahahaha We will be moving into a bungalow soon so that will put the crickets one floor closer to the bedrooms and I guess if they really drive me nuts I could get a small little desk fan and run it for 8hrs at night if they really get annoying. I hate having so many crickets, wish everything ate worms and veggies!!

i dont know whats up with mine because they never make any noise

Really?? If you figure out why let me know!!! LOL Are you using full grown crickets? Usually full grown males never shut up. I was buying 3/4" just for that reason but then I was going through too many .. I've read how easy they are to breed but don't really want to get into that, nasty stinky crawling chirping things :)

That was driving me nuts last night. I usually try and get them only a dozen at a time, I know I hav to make more trips to the pet store, twice a week, but I hate it when they are soo big. Plus sparky seems to have trouble with getting them when they are that big... I had about 5 of them in my cricket keep and I got soo annoyed yesterday that I just let them loose outside and I will get a fresh batch today that are a bit smaller.... how do you know if they are male or female crickets. Mine hang out in a tube and I just shake out whatever falls out...
