How young is too young?

I have a question as to how young you can or should sell baby leos? I was in my local petco today shopping for my red taill boa and stopped by the leos to see what kind they had in and if they had any different ones and they looked really young or not well taken care of which i wouldn't think so because that petco takes good care of thier animals but these just seemed really young. Their tales were stick thin, and i dont know if i remember correctly but the tail is a fat store no? and they were tiny smaller then what ive gotten before the leos that petsmart had were much better looking they were bigger and their tails were alittle bigger. So how young is too young for leos?

I prefer to sell at a minimum of 15 grams which is about a month old. The big stores are at the mercy of their suppliers which seem to ship what they want when they want. It gets especially bad around holiday time when they anticipate a greater demand for leos and seem to ship them smaller.

The breeders who supply the big chain stores do send out very young geckos sometimes. I've seen some that only appear to be a few weeks old. I'd say that the average breeder, at least on this forum, will sell geckos starting at 15g. We prefer to sell them at 20g or above so that we can guarantee the sex and start to see what the color and pattern will be.

Yeah I agree, I have seen some very young geckos at some of the bigger chains. I have a small mom and pop that buys from me sometimes and thats is what they want is really young ones. I still dont sell till they are about 15 grams.

The ones they send to the store I work in come in SUPER tiny and SUPER thin from the vendor. I NEVER put them on the floor to be sold like that. They stay in the back where I can keep an eye on them and get fecal tests done if they don't gain. Luckily, I work at a big store where they actually listen and care about what I think.

that was about how old they seemed if not younger it was pittiful seeing them some of them looked to be on the verge of death almost my trust in my local petco has dwindled very much i now start to go to petsmart for almost everything but mealies, i go to petco for them because petsmart dont carry the 500 count i need. and sorry ive not responded sooner been sick with the flu since sun. thank you though ill keep that in mind for if i try breeding and when to sell the babies.

Our petsmart baby was 2 1/2 grams when my sister in law bought him in November. He is 48 grams now. I have no idea how old he was but looking at him he had to be way young.

2 1/2 Grams sounds like a fresh hatchling :main_no:
