i was wondering if you absolutely have to have a humidity box because i just spray them once every 4 days and they seem to be fine but then again ive only had them 2 weeks

You need a humidity box. Spraying is bad, bad, bad. Leo's don't need any humidity in their tank, except for their moist hide to help with shedding.

Umm... actually most Leopard Breeders still spray down their geckos once in a while(Myself included) to help with shedding. And to correct you, yes Leopards do you need Humidity, Probably not much to us. But 20-40% isn't exactly harmful. ;)

I only use a moist hide when I notice he's going into shed. All other times it's just a warm and cool hide

I have a plastic container with a hole in the side and put fresh paper towels in it that are damp everyday. Leos need their humidity hide!

I have an old ice cream tub with a hole cut in the side stuffed with paper towel which i spray every other day and this is where my Leo spends most of his time!

A moist hide makes spraying them down not necessary. I have no geckos with shed issues - some came to me with missing toes, but that is it.

Any reptile or invert I keep has a humid hide/lay box in its housing unit... No matter what species it is, it can always benefit from a humid hide...

Humidity kept low.

Humidity Box a Yes.
Spraying the tank is a CAUTION flag.
Humidity should be kept low, or respiratory problems can result.
The humid hide allows them to choose just as the
underneath heat and a cool side allows temperature choice.
Spraying the tank needs to be under control with humidity gauge.
Most (not all) persons spraying the tank will tend over do it, especially
ones not supplying a humid hide.
I lost one do to respiratory problems.......never sprayed since.
take care. HJ

I think that geckos are fine as long as the humidity doesn't go up beyond 50-60%. That is what I've been told by reptile vets, so I'm going to trust them on that. Here in Florida the humidity is always hovering around 40% in my house, but so far all of my guys look bright-eyed and healthy.

It ISNT necessary, but it IS helpful. Personally, if theres some stuck shed I just help my buddy myself. But when I see him turn white (hes about to shed) I put in my little container with damp paper towels. I try to help my leo out as much as i can because when i bought him from the petstore, he has a major shed problem on his foot. He was about to lose it in a week or so, but i helped. So now hes fine but i dont want him to go through that again.

I'm a little cornfused about humid hides.

I just got a leo a week ago. First gecko for me. For a week I had a little humid hide on the warm side w/paper towels. He loved it, but it dried up every 12-18 hours. Then I read that the humid hide should be on the cool side. I made one on cool side w/hole in top made of tupperware and moist moss. He does not like it at all. A co-worker of mine has a few leos and said his don't use them either and they are not necessary. My leo looks like he's about to shed right now. He got real white looking and all of a sudden not interested in eating. So, in essence, moist hide:cool or warm side, and is it necessary? Thank you
