of people claiming to have rescued a pet this that or the other thing from a pet store.
These are not rescues, they are purchases.
Just felt the need to get that off my chest.

I agree, it really bothers me. You are giving that store business and allowing them to order more animals to sell.:( You may be saving that particular gecko, but you're allowing more to come in and suffer in its place.

Not to mention the fact that you're exposing existing animals in your collection to a potential boatload of diseases and parasites. Petstore "rescuing" doesn't help in any way. For one, you're supporting the sale of potentially sick animals and giving the store your money, which they will use as part of the process of buying more wholesale animals, and that gecko you "rescued" is just going to be replaced by another one in potentially equal or worse shape. If an animal is being kept in subpar conditions in a petstore, chances are it's going to need a good amount of vet work, so not only are you paying the store, but you'll also be paying large amounts(yes large, exotics vets aren't cheap) to try to save an animal that may very well have something like Crypto and is doomed anyways. If you want to adopt a subpar animal in need(for free or small adoption fee) and you are aware of the risks and willing to undertake them being fully aware the animal may not survive anyways, be my guest. But paying cash at a store for a sick animal is just bad for the animal, the hobby, and in general.
Sorry, this is a big peeve of mine as well.

I do agree with all of you about rescuing sick animals from a pet store that has no regard for the health of the animal and the only goal is to sale many based on normally bogus facts or the "Ooo its so cute!!! :baby:" sales pitch.

But at the same time I disagree when the pet store is a good pet store, but does not have the time or the knowledge to help the animal. I have a pet store rescue, she came in from the breeder in the worst shape I have ever seen a leopard gecko come from any breeder. She had shed stuck all over her and was bones. The weirdest part was that the pet store was not suppose to receive any blizzards from this breeder and all of the other leopard geckos from the same breeder were healthly and well fed. After calling the owner over to talk with him about the gecko, he said that he had isolated her because he knew she was sick but did not have the slightest idea on how to care for her. He was going to sell her to me for 1/2 price, but instead we agreed upon a trade.

I don't really like the whole "rescued from a pet store" thing either, but for different reasons. I think, that though many may have had bad experiences with pet stores, they are not all doomed for failure. My baby came from a pet store, and he's in pretty great shape. I think the term "rescued" is subjective--it's great if the animal or the environment is unhealthy for them, but not all pet store animals are doomed and therefore don't need "rescuing". Just my two cents :)

I'll try to respond in a nice way.

Who are you to dispute what is a rescue and not? I'm sorry if you're up tight about people's terminology, but go to the person and discuss this politely. You could have just posted in my thread, calmly correcting me that I had only furthered a vicious circle and that while I may have helped a couple of reptiles-- I just opened the door for more of the same treatment.

The flip side of the coin is, you cannot just call the ASPCA on places like PetCo, PetSmart, and Petland. Many have tried, and it just goes no where. (The contrary is different for Petland, but to my knowledge only in their sale and concurrent "insurance of vet bills" for dogs)

My next point is probably arbitrary and not of a concern to you. Whilst having done my research and knowing the resource of information that is here and on other sites from keepers that have been in the business of owning reptiles for many years, it's expensive. Now, that is not to say buying from private breeders is bad. On the contrary, you get healthy, well cared for animals through private breeders. It's also not my opinion that spending the money on and in the line of care for animals is bad. I work a minimum wage job fourteen hours a week, I'm currently attending nineteen hours of college class work, and then on top of it I'm 18 and married. A $400 pay check every two weeks only goes so far, and while I strive to provide the greatest care for the reptiles I have, I do wish to expand. That is where the "expensive" part comes in. That is where these "bad places", such as PetCo and PetSmart, come in.

I love reptiles, I love keeping them, and I do support USARK in any way I can. I'm a pro-small business political ideologist, and would love to be able to support the private breeders by purchasing their animals. The simple fact is, I cannot. So, if I go to the local PetCo and PURCHASE leopard geckos, water dragons, ball pythons, or corn snakes in the near future-- It is of my opinion that I am helping and rescuing these animals. It's how I see it, and it is none of your concern what I call it. I'm as much of reptile keeper as you are, even if I don't end up spending thousands of dollars on my reptiles.

(I don't justify what places like Petland do, I just think you need to get off my balls about it.)

I only found it is a recent topic in dear Russ's recent posts. He viewed my profile, and I assumed far more than I should have.

I also didn't check dates.

I find it funny you assumed this was directed at you.
Thanks for the laugh.

Wow! ... You've been a member here for little more than 7 full days, and then you post an outburst like this? That's sad!

Oh... I dunno, I think the thread necromancy served a purpose.

He brought himself to my attention. I plan to watch him with interest. He's someone I would never have noticed from "I'm new!" and "What morph is this?" threads. The way he dredged up a long dormant thread written by someone who he had never interacted with to post so defensively, with such indignation is just... fascinating.
