Hey.

I read a care sheet (worm man meal worm breeding), I saw that it said use potatos for mostness, well I don't have any potatos. :( What else can I use? I have tomatos. Can I use a few slices of this?

Please answer right away. :)

Breeding mealies.
So all I do is take a show box, fill it will 1 inch of that stuff they are in, and put soem slices of potato (I don't have, what can I use?), and leave them setting out untill they get into the second stage? I have around 75 meal worms left, I am useing these ones.

Is that all I do? Do I have to pock any holes in the shoe box for air??

Thanks....

Carrots?? You can use just about any veg or fruit. The only thing is,some will mold alot faster so you would need to pull them sooner.

I have another problem. I don't have a inch of that stuff they are in. I have, maybe... err.... I have no clue, I can't find a ruler any where. :| Will this be okay, the amount I have right now? I have about 2 whole container (100 count, just for size comp) of that stuff that they are in. I think it's called oats or something like that? Will this amout be okay?? Maybe I can get my mom to get me some oatmeal, the un cooked stuff that comes a big contaner tommorrow or something. Can they have oat meal flakes for their bedding? Like mixed with that stufff they are in??

Please answer....

Emma.

I don't keep a lid on my mealies. They've never crawled out of their trays/buckets.

Potatoes & carrots have worked best for me.

Oat bran, wheat bran, gut load, grains etc.

I have carrots. :) Can you answer my other questions please?

1. Do I need to poke small holes in the side of the box for air flow?
2. Will the amount of oats I have be okay for the mealies untill I get some oat meal tommorrow?
3. Do I just leave them by my bed side, like in my room? Or do they need a cooler place??

Here are some later stages I need answered, please.

1. What do I do with the pupae (sp) when they get to that stage? Just leave them and let them turn into beetles?
2. What stage will the beeetles lay eggs?
3. Will they lay their eggs in the carrots?

Thanks so much everyone! ;)

The amount of oats I have right now is about the size of those 100 count containers the 100 mealies come in. I used the stuff that the left over mealies were in before. :) Will this be enought untill tommorrow when I get some oat meal oats??

Sorry for all these questions guys...

I have one more question.

1. Do I just lay the carrots on top of the oats or like burried in the oats?

Thanks.

I just dumped the mealies in their new home. They started to dig right in. :) They are in a plastic tubiwhere (smaller one), with the oats and some carrots on top. Is this all I need?

Don't be surprised if I ask more questions soon. ;)

Aww. It looks so cool. They are wriggiling through it all. I see the top of the oat moving. It's looks so cool. BTW, this is the first time I'v attempted to breed mealies, so hope fully I get everything right and get baby mealies! :)

Just lay the carrots on top of the bedding. I separate the pupae to their own container with an inch or two of bedding. It takes up to a month or so for the beetles to lay eggs and get babies. Look carefully because they are small. Once I start seeing babies, I separate the beetles from them. Check the carrots before you throw them out because there will be babies on them. Good luck with it.

Got another question.. sorry...

Right now I have about four small peices of carrot on top spread around, should I cover the top with more carrots? Or will a few peices of carrots be fine? I peeled the carrot them cut some chunks off. :)

So how long will it take for my mealies to turn into their second stage, pupae?
It depend on how old/big the mealworms are and what kind of temps they are kept at. I have large mealworms with about 2-3 new pupa every day at 78-80.

Emma.

Hey Emma. The whole idea is to put the meal worms in something to feed them. Like oats, bran, cat food, powdered milk, other cereals, etc.
They are going to eat most anything, mix and match. It's OK..............
Then the other thing they need from you is to supply something for their moisture. Like carrots, orange peals, potatoes, greens, etc. Lots of other stuff around the house you use will work. With out moisture content items they will dehydrate and expire. Although they need moisture you don't want wet and moldy/mildew to remain very long with them..
Add to the mix they are in as it keeps getting darker and appears ground up very fine. .It's not hard to get them started. Take care. / HJ
