sorta the same thing with me. I just showed my mom that reptiles, leos in particular, were my passion. I showed her how responsible i was and how much i cared for these animals. Now i breed leos, i have 8 and more to come very soon.

Come up with a plan where she'll pay their expenses and what she will do with the hatchlings... I don't know your guys ages, but doing good in school and helping around the house always sweetens the deal...

That is advice from my ''cool uncle'' side...

''Serious Uncle'' says, from the sound of it you probably havn't been keeping them long... Provide and care for them for a few years, respect your parents wishes and in due time you'll be breeding geckos... On the other hand, you may find that you really don't want to breed them after all and you'd rather just keep them as pets...

Ok...hey, im the friend :)....ok my mom already knows how into them I am, and she already knows all the info and everything...I even showed her how I can make the incubator and the rack system and what I would do with the babies...this is all she keeps saying "I dont want any more tanks or any more lizards in your room"....Its not like I dont have the room and I am getting a job at a reptile store so I would get discounts on all the supplies I need anyway...shes just not goin for it...once I get the job though it might be easier to get her to say yes...idk....and there is no use trying to do it behind her back because she feels the need to go in my room and snoop around when im not home...she even changed my doorknob so i cant lock it...she very phsycotic....

But yea thats the whole thing....so after knowing all that...anyone have any ideas on how to help me out with this??

It was actually quite easy for me. My mom's first ruke was "if your going to have a pet it has to have four legs!". So...my first pet was a 4 ft. albino Bull Snake, lol. Don't know how I managed to get her to let me get it but I did. Then, I got a Desert King after my Bull snake passed away from parasites, ( R.I.P. Nanners). Then I got a BP, then a CRTB, then 2 milks. After all that I realized that I still have never gotten any kind of lizard. And my mom likes lizards MUCH better than snakes, so I can get like a good bit of those instead of snakes and my mom could care less, (you know the whole four legs rule). :)

My mother is quite... psychotic as well. She was fine with cats and dogs but was completely against any other pet. Once I turned 18, however, it was more of a "Hey, mom, I'm getting a salamander and she's going to arrive in 2 days." She didn't have much of a chance to say no :main_laugh:. I'm not even sure if I asked about getting a gecko, I may have just started bringing home the supplies and then she figured it out... hmm

I would say that since you are getting a job at a reptile store that that is a great chance to prove to her that you are fully capable of taking care of several reptiles at once. If she sees your dedication to the animals and your level of responsibility, I would imagine that she would be hardpressed to say no.

I would venture to guess that if proving that you're responsible doesn't work then nothing will. Work hard at your new job, keep your grades up, and save money for you supplies and unforeseen medical bills associated with keeping Leos and maybe she'll think about it.

Sara-
I understand your passion and that you are willing to be responsible for your actions regarding more tanks and more animals which would result from breeding your Leos

If your mother does not approve of you doing so -even after you are working -I believe that it would be best to wait until you are 18 and living in your own place and paying all of your own bills to live

Then you can have as many reptiles as you want

Sorry-but I don't believe that your mother having control over what is kept in her house is being psychotic

Unless you are paying her rent for your room then I am afraid that you will have to go with her decision to keep peace in your house

Two years really isn't all that long to wait to move out and be on your own- if that is your desire

Just remember that there are an awful lot of bills to be paid when you are living in your own place
I'm really not trying to be preachy-just trying to give you an older persons perspective

Yeah. Truly LadyGecko is right. I agree with her 100%.

Sometimes, parents overtime see their child's passion and see that they really take care of the pets without it being much of a problem to the house, they may be okay with more reptiles. It depends on her. My mom is fine with little inexpensive animals that are not big and always in her face. So I can't have the pig I want, until I move out.

My mom is the same with my geckos. She don't want a whole bunch, but I have more than she likes. She'll fuss if I get more, but when they breed and lay eggs, she enjoys it and thinks it is the most amazing thing, that I can hatch them in her room, which is not hot.

Perhaps like just come out and tell her. Do you think because you brought me into this world, supply me with all my needs, make these years the easiest of my life, that you can just change my doorknob and forbid my raising unlimited amounts of animals in your home? "Who do you think you are? My Mother? ........................yeah,I know you don't like my post. but..Take care anyway. HJ

One of the biggest reasons some parents are not 'good sports' about their kids having pets is because they know their own kids. I realize that many younger folks are perfectly responsible and capable of caring for their own animals... even paying for their upkeep and veterinary expenses, but many are not. My own grandkids (ages 13 and 15) don't have any of my geckos because they would soon grow bored with caring for them, and would expect their mom to do it for them. Not to mention the expense of feeding and God forbid a trip to the vet.

Another thing I feel is worth mentioning... why does everyone think they need to breed leopard geckos? There is so much responsibility involved when allow our animals to reproduce. Without a comprehensive plan for what you will do with the offspring, how the egging females will be taken care of, what to do if there was a problem with egg-binding, the expense of incubators and supplies... what's wrong with just keeping one or two as pets before attempting a breeding project?

Right now, the leopard gecko market is totally saturated with geckos for sale. Even the best breeders, with the most experience, are having problems moving their geckos. I honestly cannot see adding more to an already gutted market!
