I've handled super worms for a long time now and I don't believe I've ever been bit. I have noticed a pinch a number of times but I'm almost positive it wasn't coming from where their mouths would be. Just my opinion but maybe someone would want to test this out. I no longer feed supers otherwise I'd try it for myself.

**Side note: It doesn't hurt either, its a small worm so don't be scared **

The pinching is them biting..I've had one hang onto me. It doesn't hurt, no, it's just noticeable. I actually had this happen last night when I was feeding!

I've never even seen a super worm before so I dont know.

I didnt know they could chew through wood and stuff :main_huh:

Crickets can chew through stuff too, but not like that!

You could switch to silkies :main_yes:
All my leos love those, but they are a bit of a pain to maintain
(for me anyway).

The reason I was trying to get her to handfeed is because it has been 2 weeks since I had her and she will not eat and has lost some weight in her tail and body and I'm becoming very worried.

Then I dont understand why you didnt know something freaky was
happening to your gecko, esp, since you say it was a favorite.
I know, house fly eggs go to larvae in only a few hours (under warm
conditions), but just seems like it would take at least 3 days for the
maggots to progress that far
!!??
Maybe I'm wrong. :main_huh:

Oh crap!! sorry for the thread hijack!!

What leads you to believe that it could not occur as quickly as it did?

wowwee! all the superworm nightmares :p

i guess they are not for everyone? *shrug* ive yet to have any issues and my geckos love em... i guess i just have a hard time beleiving all of the horror stories...

baoh... sorry to hear your loss... they may of been other factors too... its the unknown that just leaves us to assume... but either way im sorry for your freekish loss :(

now supers eating wood??? maybe it was a mega-super :p he must of been in there for a while... i have wooden hides that have never been chomped on... thats just crazy lol *shrug*

if your going to hand feed i would recomend mealies, make sure they are dusted, this seems to work the best for us anyways!

I fed supers for awhile... 'till I found one that had chewed a 1/4" deep 4" long gash into my gecko's wooden log hide. (not exaggerating - I'll get pics if I need to)

...seriously...

I'm not saying it's a direct risk to the gecko - but if it can do that to wood... :main_thumbsdown:

I've never had my skin bitten or witnessed anything like that, but my supers burrow into an uncut potato or carrot without much trouble and I have had one bite down on the edge of my fingernail once. Considering the toughness of the vegetable surface and how thin gecko skin is, it's not impossible that problems can crop up in rare circumstances.

Haha I know it seems impossible. The super was probably in there 4-5 days... It wedged itself between the wood & the glass so the Gecko couldn't get to it to finish it off. I found it later when cleaning the cage... The worm just chomping away with lots of superworm poo and lots of missing wood!

...I'll get pics ;)

I had a gecko do something similar and fed supers as well.. what I did, to keep them from chomping on him was take their heads off and squeeze a little of the innards onto his mouth. He'd lap it up and then eat them. I know that sounds gross but it works. Good luck with your gecko.

I feed supers to all my leos except the babies they get meal worms. I feed by hand using tongs and they all eat them just fine. Supers do bite Ive seen it several times, just last week I had one latch on to my geckos mouth and it drew a small speck of blood. But as stated before so do crickets. I've seen crickets do way more damage to an animal and each other than i have supers. as far as not feeding them because of it, the bite of a super is nothing compared to the bites they get during mating and I'm not about to stop them from doing that. any of my geckos that have been bit shake it off and keep on eating. Just my two pennies:main_thumbsup:

I've been feeding supers to Tiamat since I got her (started her out on the small ones). She loves them. More than her mealies now.

I've never had a problem with them. Usually she eats them headfirst and crushes their heads anyway so they don't have a chance to bite her.

I don't buy supers simply because everytime I see them at a store when I'm getting crickets, mealworms and waxworms, they are usually eating the plastic container they are in and escaping. I don't believe that they will eat through a reptile's stomach but if they are able to eat plastic container material, then they must eat something else that is equally bad for the reptiles weither it is while they're in the tank with the reptile or in a container made for them.

I cannot say I have ever seen this. Especially in the circular plastic containers I get mine in that have no exposed edges for mandibles to grasp.

I usually see it every time I go to the pet store. And they're kept in the same circular containers as the mealies...

Thanks for all your input folks. Amara doesn't seem to like the taste of them and Cocoa doesn't seem to like anything but crickets ( I think that may be all she has ever had though) and thankfully I got her eating a few crickets now, so I'll just stick to those and mealies.
