Hi all.

I was doing a yard burn today when three baby snakes were coiled in my path ...

I didnt want to hurt them but my fiance made me throw them in the fire. I just want some I'd help as id feel more guilty if they were corns or something friendly.

They were babys, about six inches long each.... small scale pattern and a sortof <) shaped head. they were the EXACT color of a newly minted penny. No markings other than that... their heads were sortof shiny...

I feel like an ogre ... but snakes are a huge issue here.

we're in south GA btw... there is water on our property but these looked sortof fresh hatched.

First, thats pretty messed up throwing anything that alive into a fire whether its naturaly freindly or not.
second, you didn't want to do it but your fiance made you. Yeah I'd love to hear the part about the gun being held to your head. If you didn't want to then put a pair of pants on, man up, and tell her NO.
third, you want an I.D. on a snake you threw into the fire? I'd say it looks like a BURNT snake. Really what does it matter now?
fourth,I hope you burned your self!!!

I hope you found this as offensive as I found you posting something like that on a forum where people love and respect reptiles.

the whisperer was right!
who wears the pants in your relationship?
obviously not you.
innocent babies...
thats like taking a human child and saying "oh it might be a serial murderer when it grows up" and then throwing it in the fire.
even with a poisonous snake you can take them to wildlife rescues where they will relocate them to safer places.

You guys really need to think over your words before you let them flow out your fingers! :main_angry: Honestly!

My suggestions to you would be:

1.) DON'T THROW THESE CREATURES INTO A FIRE!
2.) Rather than EVER pick up a snake, especially when you don't know if it's venomous or not, try to find a safe way to coral them. The majority of snake bites happen from people trying to pick up snakes.
3.) Call your local SPCA if you don't want to keep them, or don't know if it's safe for you to keep them.

There are other ways of dealing with a situation like this. I'm sorry you were exposed to such childish, immature comments. :main_yes:

I did think it over before posting and I don't regret anything I said.

fyi we have many venomous snakes here- actually more than most places i've lived.

we have inside/outside pets... so yeah- i'll toss aside anything that could hurt my pets. I respect all animals and try other ways to get rid of them(snake repel. ect) but im not going to allow a venomous snake to live peacefully in my yard . . and ive had to take measures more drastic than just the ground treatment. I was unsure at the time- but unfortunately the time did not warrant a call anywhere- had i run in to google it I would have lost track of the snakes and then most likely found that they were poisonous and living in my yard...

Perhaps throwing a living snake into the fire was cruel... and I did feel bad when I thought he didnt get away....BUT it wasnt like i went out and went snake hunting in order to extermenate them all while laughing. we ran across some while trying to secure a burn line during a ground-cover burn... they were big enough where the fact that their heads were diamond shaped and they were coppery was enough to scare us . . .

and the part about keeping them? not exactly something i'd ever really do.... however we've found some GREAT animals in our yard... I just critter keeper them if they seem ok with that and take some pics and release... mostly toads, anoles and treefrogs but we did have one spiny lizard late in the summer!

I'm sorry but if you were able to catch them to throw them in the fire then you just as easily could have caught them and extracted them. What you attempted seems really cruel to me. You could have put them in the critter keepers then I.D. them then figure whether you could let them go or take them some where else. I also don't understand posting something like that for a bunch of reptile enthusiasts to read.

i NEVER said I critter keeper snakes anywhere in this post did I ? I re read it but maybe I'm missing a huge block of text that you are able to see and I am not.

Also, the ENTIRE yard was burning or hot ash. thats how you do a ground cover burn, it burns in a circle inward. next time, i just wont bother doing it so that the animals living in my mulch and leaves will be safe...forget the fact that I have five other animals that need to come home to grass there this spring...

So what was i supposed to do, carry these possible venomous snakes oh, a mile or so to the edge of the property? they were not just placid, they were irritated and COILED up. I dont care if they were 6" or 6' thats enough for me.

maybe you need to just check your sensitivity and stop replying to this. I'm done . I've said what i need to to defend myself on here...

Dude, whether you didn't have the time or guts to relocate them doesn't mean you have the right to kill them. It doesn't matter if your "fiance" told you to, it was morally wrong.

I didn't say that you have previously put snakes in a critter keeper, I was saying that you were capable of doing it as you have with other animals or did you forget that you typed this?

who ever said anything about you not doing a burn? Your post didn't say "my fire was burning in a circle and these snakes were in the middle and the fire trapped them then they parished" DID IT? No you said you threw them in the fire!
...or maybe I'm missing a huge block of text that you are able to see and I am not.
as far as you being done defending your self... Good I'm tired of your lame excuses. You, Me, and everyone else on here knows what you did is wrong. So you go ahead and say whatever you need to, to make your self feel like what you did was O.K. :main_thumbsdown::main_thumbsdown:

Wait, so did you throw them in the fire or did they slither away? Im confused. Next time please try to relocate them. Yes, they could be venomous, but they are also living creatures that feel pain :(

I couldn't help but my laugh my ass off on the burnt snake ID comment...nice one lol.

Have to agree with you too, it bugs the hell out of me when people post a comment about murdering an animal on a forum devoted to the love of those types of animals....come on, have some common sense. This isn't a burn but you gotta understand where people are coming from. If you felt the need to tell that kind of story go find a "i hate snakes" or "i burn living creatures" forum....you had to know that post was going to piss some people off. I'm honestly having a hard time actually believing that they didn't burn to death....it sounds like one of those things where you posted the truth & u realized it pissed some folks off so now you're changing your story. Also, last time i checked nobody can make you do something you don't want to...if you didn't want to kill this poor creatures you would have just left well enough alone & let nature take its course, live or die...not intentionally throw them into burning flames.

As for the argument i read about protecting your pets if they are venomous or whatever....why not keep an eye on your pets & there won't be an issue? The only venomous snake i know of from that description is a copperhead & they aren't exactly going to be hunting any sort of pet you have. They're small & an extremely shy snakes....typically the only reason they bite anyone is b/c they were stepped on or had no other choice (ie cornered). There are safe & easy ways to remove them w/out having to toss them into a proverbial hell. Also, you obviously didn't have much fear of them b/c you threw them in.....if you did that you must have picked them up in some way, so why not just take them somewhere further away from your home? Again, it's not like i'm trying to burn you but you gotta understand that a lot of us are snake lovers....especially myself. Some of us live by the Steve Irwin way of life which is regardless of the possible danger of the animal you give them a chance to live a peaceful life. To me this is a lot like when people at work come up to me, knowing my love of reptiles & tell me about the snake they found in their garage they beheaded....like i'm going to give them a high five for it.

I agree with most of the posters. If you were burning your yard and accidentally burned some snakes because they were in the way of the flames, that's one thing and I'd feel bad for you, but throwing snakes in a fire is disgusting and I'm not sure why someone would post something like that. No one can MAKE you murder an animal. This is really a ridiculous, altogether unnecessary thread.
