I took my leopard gecko to the vets today as we have had him for 3 weeks and he has not eaten and he had pooped strange sandy like poo, we were concerned as the pet shop had him on sand and so we thought it may be an impaction. we found out today however this is not the case when examining him there was excess fluid in his tummy and not a great deal else. thhe vets were concerned that he may have stomach abnormalties and would if he was larger or weighed more been able to take it further by x-rays because he is simply too small and terribly anorexic the risk was very high and they didnt think anything would show on ultrasound etc. we were given two options the first being to put him to sleep however because he seems so alert and hydrated it seemed unfair to not give him a chance. so the second option is to assist feed him to see if we can kick start his appitite and hope it sorts itself out of he will get big enough for a more detailed diagnosis. so we have started to puree his food and he has eaten for the first time in weeks. i was just curious to know if anyone has had to do this?n any similar situations and the possible outcome.

I think it's worth a try. There is some info somewhere on this site about a slurry (puree) you can make that is nutritious. Sadly, I have not had good experience trying to rehabilitate young geckos that have problems due to abnormal development. A lot of these geckos tend to look and act really perky until they become seriously ill. It's a survival trait not to become vulnerable by looking ill.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't try, but I don't want you to get your hopes up. This is different from bringing a formerly healthy back to health because it wasn't fed adequately. If for some reason, this gecko doesn't make it, I would encourage you to get another, but consider contacting a breeder (lots on this site) and/or going to a show instead of buying from a petstore which in many cases, especially the chain stores, overcrowds geckos that are too young to sell and stressed from shipping under poor conditions (that may be the longest sentence I've ever written).

Good luck,

Aliza

I just learned this trick and believe it is a little cheaper than the slurry and it helped me alot. Go to Pet--co and in the shedding aids is a rectangular box called Jumpstart. Follow what it says on the box, and also mix some in the water. Wait a day and put some crickets in. My leo whose been pretty lousy on eating ate 8 large within 20 minutes.
