the first time i got him, he was crawling on my shoulder, then when i picked him up he bit my left midle finger. freaked me out. so i put him back in his enclosure, so i tohught he would be stressed cause he just moved. then when i was trying to pet him, he was jumpy. so i freaked and left him alone. thought hes still stressed., cause the time he bit me, my finger was bleeding. today i was cleaning his enclosure, but i wore some worker gloves, cause im scared he would bite me. when i was about to pick up the poop infront of his hide, he came out and bit me, it didnt hurt, but scared the shit out of me. why is this so? its been a few weeks already....
this is giving me the idea... that im starting to hate geckos. cause this is my first one.

First off I would suggest you read the TOS because you don't want to be banned for bad language.

Secondly, it will take time for your gecko to get used to you, and its all about putting time into your animals, i suggest you look at HJ's video (geckogathering) and hes training threads, they work extremely well.
Pick your gecko up, even for 5 mins inside hes cage. and put him back, spend more time with him.

Some leos are cranky, it's just the way they are(Blizzards!) You need to accept the fact that there are times when you might get bitten, just as there are times when a cat owner might get scratched. In reality, leo bites aren't very painful. Give him time to calm down and take it slow. Most geckos don't care for "petting," poking/prodding tends to send them the wrong signals. I don't think gloves are necessary. Remember to use an open handed technique(scoop, don't grab) and to move slowly. Young animals especially are nervous and tend to calm down with age. It takes time. And don't "hate" geckos just because you gotten bitten, it's a minor injury and not really worth getting worked up over.

When did you get your gecko? And how old is it? Also how are you picking him up?

I like the scoop from in front method so they see me coming, if your coming from behind your probably spooking him out and he sees no other option but to attack to get you away.

It shouldn't hurt that much. And please refrain from that language. We do got a couple youngsters on here.

Move slowly, don't grab from above, let the gecko smell (lick) you first, etc. Some geckos just don't like being held, but most will calm down after a while. My geckos actually recognize me from other people and will let me do stuff to them that they'd bite other people for.

Try washing your hands immediately before you handle the gecko. I've noticed that certain smells really set my geckos off, and as a result they resist being handled.

Hey,

Dont be scared of him else you'll never bond. When I first got my Aurora I lifted her hide to catch a locust and she chirped at me an nudged my hand but she was sleeping and I must of startled her and normally thats when they get grumpy.. doesn't mean you can't handle them. It put me off but I still did it, and now were great together. Sounds odd but I used to take her in to the bathroom in her hide then sit in there until she came out and explored round and doin this each day for a while let her get used to who I was and I'm glad I did. Leo's are great pets. Just remember don't just go in over his head to pick him up he will nip you then as he think's your a threat, and if he is sleeping an you wake him he won't be pleased. Try to handle him in the evening time when he's active.

Hope you dont get put off, Good Luck

Stace x
