Hi.

I set my Incubator up for testing the temps max-mins,i stored the incubator at the coolest place in the house but i still can't get it under 85 even if i don't plug it in,when i turn the ac on it goes down of course but i can't leave it on forever, normal steady temp is around 86,what could i do since i want to incubate them for females?

Also do you fill the plastic part of the incubator up with water?
I think no since you have the humidity from the vermiculite or wahtever substrate already?

THX for the help again.

If the air temperature in the house is above the temp you want the incubator to be, the incubator will not be lower than that temp. If you have a basement, that's a good bet. That's where my incubator is from June-Oct. Ideally, you should do the following:

a. get a proportional thermostat (search forums for info about what this is) that goes between your incubator and the outlet and will control the temp better. If your room air temp is not 85 degrees, this may solve the problem

b. add water to the substrate in the containers to achieve proper humidity. There are a number of resources about how much to add. One good one is "ALbey's method" which is on his website listed at the top of the page.

c. put either a bag of water or a cup of water on the bottom of the cage, either above or below the mesh. This will help stabilize the temps. Filling the bottom of the incubator with water can be messy and may not significantly affect the humidity inside the egg containers.
