I have brand new Hovabator 1602. I've plugged it up to get my temp stabalized before my female starts laying, which should be anytime. But my temps are going up and down. During the day they are staying around 82.5, but at night they go down to 79.8. Will this be a problem? How can I fix this problem? Give me some ideas, please. Thanks!

Did you take the wafer thermostat that comes with the Hova out?

Are the temps relatively steady in the area of the house you have the Hova sitting in? If not, you'll need to move it to an area where the temps don't change too much.

What do you mean by taking out the wafer? The wafer is in there attached to the adjustment rod. I'm not sure on the consistancy of the room temp.. Our house thermostat stays on 70º. I have it in my closet, it is on the floor. Should I move it somewhere else maybe? I live in double-wide/modular home so if anyone dosen't know heating and cooling one of these hillbilly mansions isn't the easiest, like a real house is. :main_laugh: We're in the season were it's warm during the day and cold at night so could be my issue? If I put eggs in with these temps going up and down will it affect my eggs? Any ideas will be appreciated, as this is my first time breeding. Thanks :D

I just got one last week and found the same thing. Not the nicest thermastat in the world but that's what you get for $50 I suppose. How does the wafer thermostat work by the way? And why and should it be taken out? Won't that give you a runaway high temp. incubator?

You aren't using a seperate thermostat with your Hova? Those wafers are known to be pretty unpredictable. I thought you'd be using some sort of proportional t-stat or something. :main_huh: That's why I suggested removing the wafer.

Just using the wafer. Should I have had a different set-up? I now have one egg in so I hope this isn't that big of a problem. :main_huh:

To be completely honest with you, I'd be surprised if anything hatched out because of the temperature swings you're describing. You need to get yourself a reliable thermostat and ditch the wafer. Sorry!

To provide consistant temperature, you need to buy a separate thermostat. It's impossible to measure exactly how much you're adjusting the temperature with that one. I use a Helix, and I know Big Apple has a nice one too. Once you get the thermostat, set it to the temperature you have been aiming to incubate at, and it should take a few days to adjust itself.

you said it was on the floor, is your floor well isulated if not you might want to put it up somewhere. try and find a spot that isn't near a window or vent or any thing thats going to change the temps. Also I put a bag of water in the bottom of my incubator to help stablize the temps. I use a gallon ziplock bag fill it about 1/5 to 1/4 the way than put it in onother zip lock and lay it flat on the bottom under the mesh. And yes a new thermostat would be a good idea. good luck hope this helps. Also does your model have a fan?

Don't ever take out the waffer at all. If you decide to use something else beside the waffer then turn the knob all the way up to the highest you can get it. Whatever thermostat you decide to use will turn it on or regulate it. Messing with the waffer just might mess everything up.

The hovabator will fluctuate a little but putting it in a room that is a constant temp will help. Not everyone can afford the top notch equipment all the time so as long as the hovabator doesn't fluctuate more then 3 degrees then ytou should be fine. Deformities will happen with husbandry issues, genetics, and incubation problems such as fluctuating temps.

Hey. I hatch females in a small area
(no incubator) that ranges 78 to 84. No problem hatching females.
I was 27 for 27 in 2008. It has become my female method by choice.
Take care. Hj
