what are the pros and cons of using the locking lids instead of the tight fit shelves with no lids ? i bought 4 iris buckle-up boxes today with locking lids they are 30 quart 16 x 22 x 7 and i was going to use them to build a 30 rack shelve if they are ok. will i get enough ventilation with 1/4 inch holes or do i need to install some computer fans in the rack ?

Just easier

Holes in the tubs should be enough. You might want to put some in the lids as well. But it will be alot of work to pull out 30 tubs and remove the lids everyday to check and clean them. It's much faster and easier w/o lids and you can just pull the tubs out half way and clean/inspect them.:main_thumbsup:

To me the shelf with the tight fit is the best. The reason why is because then I don’t have to snap on and off a lid. I can just leave the box hanging out while cleaning. Just slid in, slid out. With a top, not only will the shelf have to be higher, so you can’t fit as many in, you would have to pull the box all the way out to clean in, then snap on the top then slide it back. Might not sound that bad, but if you get a lot of gecko, it will be a pain.

I don’t think you need a fan. I would just put about 20 holes in the front with a soldiering iron, and it will be perfect. Those boxes could hold up to 4 leos a piece in my opinion as well.

I agree with Nicholas, the lids are cumbersom and IMO opens opportunity for escapes and potential for more accidents to happen. It is much more convienant to slide the container half way out and do your maintenance and slide it back.

More open sides exposed while doing maitenance. I have only been using racks for six months and never had one get out while I was doing maintenance. However when I was using lids I had troubles keeping them in. They have alot less space to get out and it is much easier to control. They would have to crawl out the front side to get out and most Leos go to the back while doing maitenance.

Yeah, if you can make it work w/o the lid, it would be alot easier. So I agree with Nick and anybody who said the same thing. :)
