hey i have kept a tremper albino leo for about 3 years. i love all animals fish and reptiles especially and i have been wanting to go bigger and maybe do a breeding project on this great species. but im wondering... i have 2 empty 55 gallon tanks that i would like to use (atleast 1) for maybe instead of breeding leos... keeping knobtails? thanks

Someone else will have to tell you about knobtails. THe issue with breeding leos is that, besides the tank you keep the breeders in (if you decide, as I do, to keep the breeding groups together throughout the season), what you really need is a lot of smaller spaces to keep the hatchlings either individually or in clutchmate pairs. It won't work well to have babies of all different sizes/ages in one huge tank.

I can see the 55 gallon being good for your breeding group of adults. Rack systems utilizing sterilite tubs are fairly inexpensive and would be good for housing hatchlings individually. Good luck with your project. :)

thanks guys :D.
yeah i have been thinking about a rack system. i forgot to say i also have an empty 10 gallon and a small hexagonal tank. i really just dont want to have a bunch of empty tanks lying around my house... i love leos personality wise, and their looks/ easy setup. but i would maybe do both. i mean... i do have TWO big tanks so i might get a levis or 2. i dont know for sure. still thinking... thanks again :)

Keep in mind one female can lay up to 16 fertile eggs. I had a female last year lay and hatch 18. Definitely consider a rack

How will u find homes for the babies? Or will you keep them all? There are many people breeding, so the supply is high and demand low.

At 14, how will you feed the hungry mouths, buy supplies, ship, drive to meet people?

Sorry to seem like a downer, just thinking realistic.

thx for the advice. i decided its probably best not to do leos. im fine keeping just one :) i am gonna go in the direction of keeping knobtails, possibly breeding them later on. thanks again to opening my eyes a little wider about what goes into breeding those.
