Leo Jumpers!

I've built this structure from slate tile and I'm wondering if a leo will be able to recognize that they are high up in the air and not simply slide off the edge into a terrible fall?

I have not seen this happen yet but I haven't had one reach the top yet either. There are easy ramps all the way to the top so getting there and back is not a problem. Just the fall.

Anyone else out there have an upper level?

That doesent look to high, remember leos are not aboreal, although if given the chance, they will climb, they not for graceful lol.

ehhh, I wouldn't worry it doesn't look that high, and I have some leos that just like to jump off things...they're strange

I wouldnt worry about the height as much as I would be worried if it ever came loose and fell on one of the geckos. i think as long as you know that it is very secure you should be fine.

I only have 1 leo, so my experience is far less than others. However, I know my leo would just run off the edge. She always presses up against the glass and then slides down, crashing into the ground from wherever she is. Apparently I am the only one that thinks that is too high. But I would also be nervous about it falling, as Thomas said.

Thanks for the comments. No problem as far as it falling over or breaking apart. I'm sure I could stand on it and not have it come apart and I'm a little over 100g...:main_yes:

BTW the large platform is 8" off the floor of the viv. I'll keep an eye out of flying reptile!!! They may fall once but twice????

If he was on a mad chase for a cricket, then maybe I could see I high dive worthy of a 10.0. He'd have to be pretty darned hungry to make that leap though. Nice flat :)

It's working well. I don't see much action on the upper level though. I've added a ceramic element on top of the screen cover as I'm finding the more slate I add to the enclosure the more the temperature drops. I think the slate is acting like a big heat sink. I've seen one leo fall from the upper level when I placed it on the top platform after handling. She went off the back side but landed on the ramp going up to level two. I'm not sure the upper level is being used all that much. I'm starting to second guess my design.

I've seen both of them climb the backdrop foam right to the top of the cage though. I keep trying to get a picture but they don't stay up there for very long. Odd to see a leo vertical...:main_laugh:

They both seem to like to hang out in the moist hide under the structure and at the back between the structure and the foam backdrop.

I think they're spending way too much time in the moist hide. Anyone else have this problem? I've seen them both in there at the same time for up to three hours. I don't think this is good for their respiratory systems. I can easily lock the moist hide off by sliding it forward about 2 inches. No, they're not getting ready to shed. They both just finished...

I'm really liking the exo-terra viv with the doors that open at the front. I don't know how anyone could manage going in through the top all the time. It's great for handling as it's easy to get the leo's in and out. Not to mention all the fussing with food dish, calcium dish, water dish and crickets. I wish they would make a 20 or 30 long stackable model with the same doors! :main_thumbsup:

Well, in my experience leos are pretty smart about where they spend their time. It seems like mine have a set schedule through the day. If they like the moist hide let them use it. Me personally i have built something that high for my leo, she goes up their real late at night or when shes bored. So they'll use it at one point doesnt mean you'll catch them in the act.

OH yeah i agree about the exoterra for ground herps. That would rock. But did you see the glass 20 gallon long with the sliding glass doors in the front? its from Glasscages.com Im picking up one in a month or so. its only 50 bucks not bad if you ask me. OH and you can save on shipping if you go to one of their booths at the reptile shows they go to. They always have their best sellers there, including the 20gallon slider.

I saw one of our SHTCTB climb all the way to the top platform yesterday. She was feeling real curious so I put my hand in the cage and she climbed up my arm. When I placed her back on the top platform she found her way back down without falling.
It's been three weeks and I think they're both feeling quite comfortable in the new surroundings. My 5 yr old had one climb up his arm and lick his face last night.
They seem to be more responsive on the days that I don't feed them...maybe they're just looking for a meal?

They probably are looking for a meal. They realize you are that "huge creature that keeps dropping food in here". Who knows, may to they pray to you at night?? Haha, here goes someone that doesn't believe in religion talking about praying geckos...
