My leopard gecko has an eye infection. I have been using Gentamicin drops for 2 weeks and it is improving. He still likes to keep it closed but it is starting to look better. However, he hasn't eaten by himself in over 4 weeks. I force fed him cat food a week ago but I am trying to get him to take food on his own.

Any ideas as I am getting concerned...:main_no:

I honestly hope this is a joke =s
Take it to the vet for the eye problem, but why would you feed a leo cat food? It will do more harm then good I am sure.

Vets that dont work with herps, tend to give us cat food :main_huh: there is no reason there should be ANY cat food in ANY leopard geckos diet, Meal worms, wax worms, roaches, silkworms,Phoenix worms, crickets and even superworms are Perfect as a diet so Please pick some feeders on that list, Your better off feeding the cat food to fluffy the cat, then a leopard gecko. Eye drops will work (i take it the vet gave you these) but if you never owned a leopard gecko before, feel free to tell us the set up, and system you have with your reptile to double check everything seems in order, its not your fault for the cat food, just for some reason Vets that normally deal with cats/dogs tend to "Guess" what a leopard gecko would need...Cat food isn't it.

Moose is a 1 yr old gecko and weighs 71 grams. He still looks great and hasn't lost much weight even though he hasn't eaten in about 4 weeks. I havent given him any of the cat food in over a week. Hoping that he would get hungry and snap out of it. I soak him in warm water every day as that tends to make him open his eye.

Hi is in a 20 gal long tank
under tank heater
reptile carpet on the floor
cacium in a dish
water
hide in the heat
hide on the cooer side

I have been running a light for the last week to raise his temp.

Thank you,

Nick

We have dealt with eye problems too. As for the cat food..isn't their cat food the slurry recipe at the top of this forum?

What have you tried to feed him? We had change foods when our first leo had her eye infection.

FWIW it took me about 9 months to get her back to being healthy again. It was a long road.

My very first leo years ago got an eye infection from using sand as a substrate (i know now that it is horrible, this was 7 years ago btw). The vet prescribed a friend of mine who's gecko had the same problem a different form of neosporin. They contain the exact same ingredients at least. That was applied twice a day and it went away within a week. You can purchase repti-aid or a reptile suppliment feeding system at any local petstore almost or online, or you can use a bit of baby food to try to stimulate feeding. Cat food just seems way off the mark to me though...weird.

FWIW..here the ingredients for the slurry... it contains pet food.

In a blender, combine:
1 small can Hill's A/D pet food (available at most vets)

1/4-1/3 cup Ensure (not chocolate)

1 jar baby food squash -

1/4-1/3 cup Pedialite

2 crushed tablets or contents of 2 capsules Milk Thistle (herbal supplement, liver purifier, found at most drug stores.)

1/2 tsp. each calcium powder and herp vitamin powder -

1-2 extra large handfuls of mealworms
