I'm in this hobby (geckos and bps) for the love first, if I can break even that would be nice. Now if I could actually do it for a sole income and nothing else that would be even better. I've spent over 15k on just purchasing BPs alone this year, and sure I'd like to make some of that money back. We all know there is no guarantee of making money especially when working with animals. So I look at it this way. I've worked hard and I've earned some money, I pay my bills, and I spend time with my kids, I deserve to indulge into what makes me happy, and caring for my animals always makes me happy. If I produce any BPs this coming season I will be more excited that I did it, than what morphs I may produce. It's that pride that many of us enjoy, and if we can make a little money doing it at the same time, why not? We aren't going to be rich breeding reptiles and I think most of us know that.

Very well put, as long as you're having fun, it's all good! If you expect and need to make X amount of $$$ or you'll lose your home due to what you spent on snakes, I can't imagine anyone is having too much fun. I know I would not be having fun with something like that over my head. I try not to spend more than I can afford to lose. Always hope and prep for the best (what if you have 30 babies or 8 eggs?...GREAT!). But, be prepared for the worst (what if it slugs out for 3-4-5yrs, what if it dies?..Now what?).

If the only thing you have on your mind when you buy one of these animals is "How much will I make?"....you might find yourself in over your head.

I didnt say their is anything wrong with someone spending big bucks on a herp if they can afford it. My opinion is that no herp is worth that kind of money to me. I would imagine if you are going to spend that kind of money on a herp you would have to have some plans for breeding, otherwise your spending all that money for what, to say you own one?.

Nope not really. You've seen my pied girl..... Do I plan on breeding her? Yes, but only if I manage to find a pied male next season that would be ready around the same time she is. If I had no plans on breeding her would I still have bought her? Oh Yes! I enjoy looking at her and who wouldn't? :main_thumbsup: For some of us it's not about "Saying we own one." it's about the beauty of the animal and how much we enjoy that particular animal.

I didn't mean to single you out Jason on that, I was just making a point about breeding for money. ;)

What I find crazy is those guys who spend $20,000 on a boat, another couple $1000 on rod and reels and tackle. All to go out on the boat a couple times a year, spend another couple $100 each time they go out...to maybe catch $20.00 worth of fish, if any at all..lol. You think they ever considered if they would catch enough fish to pay back the boat and expenses or maybe they just enjoy fishing?...lol

Or does everyone who spends $10,000+ on a motorcycle that may kill him, expect to win millions on a race? Some people truly enjoy this hobby, regardless of income. I wouldn't spend the $$$ on a boat or motorcycle, I like snakes...lol Again, the key for me is not to spend more than I can afford to lose.

There is also nothing wrong with buying a snake as an investment for breeding purposes if you are a breeder. Some people make a living doing this, nothing wrong with that either...:main_thumbsup:

I guess if you can justify spending that kind of money for something to look at, I never really see my BPs lol. I defently dont breed for money, generally give any babies away. Imagine monthly payments on a herp:main_laugh:

again you are missing my point, defently dropping big bucks on a herp is an investiment, that would be the only way I could even think about spending big bucks on a herp, its not that I would really want to make money off it but the only way I could likely afford it. I also would never spend $20,000 on a boat either lol, I love to fish but boats are a pain..

It think all comes down to personal finances. Have you seen some of those MTV Crib shows? One guy the other day had spent $1,000,000 on watch! And the crap these people spend $1000's and $100,000's on is crazy! But, if they made $25,000,000 this year and can drop a million watch without flinching, more power to them. I may see that mindbogglingly crazy based on my finances, but to them it's a 2 weeks work...lol

Whenever I come in from fishing all day in my boat and only have a few fish to show for it ( along with a third degree sunburn ), I tell my wife it's the most expensive dinner she'll ever eat:main_laugh:

BTW that's a VERY Beautiful Snake:main_thumbsup:

lol...very true!! My buddy spent $30k on a flats boat last year, insurance payments whether he takes it out or not, every time he goes out he spends $100+, and he only uses it 6-10X's a year! He doesn't even keep the fish he catches, it's all catch and release. But, he sure does love fishing and looks forward to it all month!

I like fishing to, but I don't like it that much to drop $30k for a boat to sit in my lot 8MO out of the year...lol I'd rather rent a boat for the day I want to go fishing...lol Everyone has their hobbies, wants, passions, etc, etc. If you can afford to indulge it, great!
