Liquid Calcium warning.

Not sure exactly where this should go but wanted to send out a warning.

I started to notice a few symptoms of MBD in one of my hatchlings and quickly ordered Fluker's liquid calcium from Amazon. I got it yesterday, there was a 2015 expiration date on the outside of the box and the directions clearly said it was safe to administer directly to the gecko. I proceeded to give two drops of it to my little 17g gal. The second it hit her tongue she started to shake her head violently and some of it splattered on my hand. It BURNED like acid. I immediately flushed the poor little geckos mouth out with water and put her back in her cage at about midnight last night. She was dead when I awoke to check on her at 7am this morning with bruising around her mouth and chest. I am horrified that my lack of caution in using a product on one of my animals resulted in their pain and death. I would caution folks to test any product they plan to administer orally to a bitty creature on their own skin and the skin of their reptiles before putting it into their mouths :(

I contacted Amazon and Flukers and they are both handling my complaint promptly and professionally. Amazon immediately put a stop to the sale of the product and Fluker's gave me their FedEx acct number so the bottle could be sent to their lab for testing. I don't know that the Fluker's product is to blame. I'm starting to think this may be a very old product that was labeled with a 2015 expiration date by the seller or the warehouse the seller purchased their goods from. I'm eager to learn what the lab tests show and get to the bottom of this. Hopefully at least two large companies will be made aware of a potentially dishonest seller or a deadly side to a commonly used and sold product.

RIP little gecko :(

That's terrible! I usually add the liquid calcium to their water, but now you're making me re-think the whole idea.

Keep us posted on what the company says.

RIP baby :(

Sorry to hear that, I've used liquid calcium many times on many animals with no problem. But maybe that brand?

Wow that is very scary. I have a Zilla liquid Calcium Supplement that expires in April/15. I haven't used it yet I did however just spray a bunch on my arm lol. It is just scary that something like is such a real possibility.

Lisa, thanks for sharing and alerting members of unfortunate experience. Is Flukers going to give you the info on their results? It would be good to know if it was mislabeled or maybe a bad batch ran. My understanding of liquid calcium that is expired is that the potency decreases slightly over time but it is still usable. I have been using a human grade Clacionate Syrup produced by Rugby. I purchased the bottle in 2008 with an expiration of 5/09 with no ill effects.

That is horrible, I'm so sorry for the loss of your little bub. :(
Thank-you for sharing though! Hopefully they give you the results of their tests so that you at least know why it did that to your little one.

I had the same thought, usually after the expiration date passes it declines in potency.

Very sad to hear about this and hope that they can give you more information about what exactly happened.

Wow, just read this. I am so sorry for your loss. I have, on occasion, used liquid calcium for my leos, but mainly for my bearded dragon. I have always purchased through Cheryl at her Rio Reptile Store. You might want to check them out on your next purchase.

Quite sorry it took me so long to respond! I've been out of town and running around at a plastic pony show (Breyerfest) since last Thursday (yes...there are even stranger hobbies than keeping geckos...haha).

I spoke directly to the folks at Flukers and they said they will test the stuff in the bottle and provide me with the results. At this point I can't blame Flukers as I don't know if it was caused on their part by something like age or manufacturing, or if it could have been caused by mislabeling or mishandling by the seller. I am FedExing the stuff to them tomorrow or Tuesday and keeping a couple of mL of the liquid in a vial here just in case they don't get back to me so I can have it tested myself. I will most definitely update this thread when I hear something back from them! I'm super interested in getting to the bottom of this!

That's horrible. I thought about buying liquid for my female breeders, but I think I'll wait. I hope they get back to you soon. So sorry for your loss.

I tried to find some human grade liquid Ca but failed and wound up getting some Repashy RescueCal for them. It comes in a powder you have to mix with water. I gave a couple drops to a couple of my babies by spotting it on their noses (NOT and easy task...haha). They seemed intrigued by the taste and licked their noses a lot faster for the second drops. They all went home and happily ate a handful of mealworms afterward so it looks promising I won't wake up to another horror story in the AM.

Flukers stuff was sent out today so they should have it by the end of the week. I kept about 5 mL here and will go bug my chemist friends for access to their lab and brain in a few weeks if Flukers doesn't get back to me with a verdict.

Sorry all! I've been out of town since the 7th at a friend's wedding where time and internet connections were a bit tough to come by. I haven't heard anything from Flukers but will email them tomorrow to make sure they got the bottle and see if they have done any tests!!
