I just started my Dubia colony, these guys are AWESOME feeders! The geckos love them, I love keeping them, and they are clean, quiet and don't jump or climb. I can feed them to my leos, fat tails, and knobtails... it's a win/win do-it-yourself feeder! They look sort of like large Rolie Polies, I picked this little one up today and took this pic... how cute?!

Who can resist that face? Well...the picky worm eaters will resist not just the face, but the whole roach...lol.

p.s. I think baby dubias are cute too~

I don't really think they are 'cute', as in wanting to pick them up and kiss them, lol, sorry for the visual. The photo is cute... I guess only those who have dubias can understand. I rarely even notice they are the detested 'roaches' everyone talks about. They are much better than crickets, and are fun to watch on occasion.

That is a cute picture - it's when they are creepy adults that roaches get to me.

How big do your adults get? I love my little banana roaches, but they can fly. My little D. vittatus love them though! Can your dubia get out of the bins in your rack? I know the bananas have no trouble escaping if they are not eaten quickly. I don't mind the occasional stray banana bug, but I really don't want to find lots of stray roaches.

Good Question. Do any of you who breed B. Dubia roaches have a lot of escapees?

Never have I had en escapee. They do not climb tubs, I don't care what people tell you. Maybe other species of roaches, but never have I seen a Dubia climb either the tubs my geckos are in (IRIS) or the big Rubbermaid tub I keep them in. Males CAN flutter, mostly when they are startled or stressed, but just keep the lid on the tub and you're just fine. The Dubia in the tubs with the geckos are all eaten up pretty dang fast too...not even given the chance to hangout in there.

Hey Nancy. . . I'm just starting out with my colony, but my adult females are about 2 1/4 inches in length, the males a bit smaller... they do not climb or escape... I have not had a problem with them getting out of the tubs at all.

My set-up consists of a 15 gallon rubbermade tub with Egg Crate, 10 grain cereal, with water crystals for moisture + the occasional banana + carrots. It seems to work quite well, I also keep them at about 92 degrees so they will breed. :) I'm just waiting for my first female to pop!

Thanks for the info!

My racks are lidless, so if they can get up to the top, they could squeeze out. Mostly, I would worry about them escaping from the breeders' enclosures. They are less secure from a roach perspective and the adults don't always eat the moment the food is offered.

I'm also thinking 2+ inches is still beyond my roachy tolerance limit - lol! I'll stick with my pretty, little green ones for now!

I can say I completely understand you here, Nancy... the adult roaches kinda creep me out still, I just ignore them when I go and grab the little nymphs for feeding... I still don't have the guts to pick one of them up by hand yet. LOL.

I'm interested to hear more about your little green banana bugs, are they working well for you, other than the occasional escapee?

Sorry Britt. I really don't think that cockroach is 'cute'.

LOL!! I agree with you.

I am starting to get used to them, and they are finally producing
babies (LOTS and lots of babies!!).
I dont freak out anymore when they crawl on me :main_rolleyes:

They really are the best feeder, all my guys love them, they are
a pleasure to keep (unlike crix), and they are nice and solid (meaty)
so I dont have to feed as many.

But no, they are NOT cute! :main_rolleyes:

The only way that thing could be cute would be squished under my shoe :D
