I don't even have a subscription to a reptile mag, so not sure if it should be in this board or not. Or if this is even a point if it has been covered in a magazine.
Anyhow, I know that RT's leos have been on the cover of a magazine and in articles about leos. I don't know what other breeders have been or in the new gecko manual.
Has anyone here had thier leos featured in a rep. mag at all? Off the top of my head I can think of the enigma, raining redstripes, electrics, snows, tornados etc. I'm sure I'm missing some others. Have any of these been in an article that anyone knows of?

Ive seen an article by RT and an article by the lady who "discovered" blizzards. then I didnt get the article with the Raptor on the cover. But aside from those, the only leo pics ive seen in r.m. are advertisements

that would be awesome if we could publish a gecko magazine:) It would be hard to come up with enough to write a magazine on. Maybe we could share a magazine with like corn snake breeders, and ball python breeders and something else, so that way we could fill a magazine, and then we know there would be gecko stuff in each one:)

You would never be able to write a gecko only magazine, thats my point. You might be able to write 1 or 2 issues, but after that you would run out of things to write about. Thats why i suggested comming out with a breeders magazine instead of just leopards in general. Id like to see the magazine have more than 2 issues a year:)

I think there are enough species of geckos that we could make a mag and not run out of article topics. I think it would be a great idea. Any good writers, editors, journalists here? Heheheh That would be awesome if someone took this project on.

While I agree that a leo only magazine can't have more than 6 months of articles, I think a general gecko one would be alright. With over 1100 species and subspecies of gecks, I think we'd be able to find SOMETHING to write about (even if it's just an article about a trip someone took and they saw geckos). I would think it would do alright.

The problem with such an endevour is the large startup costs. 1000 64-page issues costs about $6 each to print, plus shipping. It gets down to about $1 each for 15000, but that's a lot to print and 64 pages isn't that big. I would have to think something like this would have to start as a 'online release' magazine for the first few months until a large enough base built up to print. I would think this could do well with advertising (after a few months) to help reduce the price, but again you need the initial startup costs so running via the web would be the best for a while. I've had an Leopard Gecko article accepted by Reptiles magazine a while back (my teacher submitted it b/c she thought it was good, and they actually offered to print it and pay me but I declined), so I can write about the animals I know about. I'd be happy to spearhead the project (at least the web development and setup side of it) this summer (too busy now!). It's an interesting idea and I think we should run with it... if nothing else it could attract people to geckos (think how much geico has helped the gecko's image)

I think it would introduce more people to lots of other types of geckos and maby help get their markets up a bit more which translates to me as: More variations of color, pattern, and more species for you and I to own and enjoy. It would also be a good place to put gecko classifieds so people who can't or don't shop on the net can buy from small breeders too. When someone makes it just make sure to add my name to the subscribers list.

With all the new species of geckos i think it would be easy. There are tons of caresheets yet to be nade for some of the newer geckos and stuff too.

I agree. With new species being discovered constantly (and we're learning more about existing species all the time), I don't think we'd have a shortage of things to write about. We may run into a shortage of people willing to write articles, though. I can only see good coming from this idea for geckos, newbies, and breeders alike. I think we could also raise money to help conservation and education efforts, report both detailed and beginner articles, and help the gecko family of species tremendously. Almost a 'Gecko organization' that produces a magazine as the source of income. Like a magazine, I think web subscriptions (or at least basic level subscriptions) could be free and be entirely ad supported. Once we get enough people looking at it we can consider going to a printed magazine. Once printing it's only a matter of contacting the major pet store chains, etc about getting the magazines distributed around the US. We already have a huge knowledge base with all the gecko people here and the great animals they have, as well as some great photographers. Additionally we can hold photo contests, run a yearly calendar, etc, which before has always been spread out among multiple locations. I think it's important to run it like a magazine, where we release a new 'issue' every month or so, even if it is just web-based.

Personally one of the reasons I don't like reptiles magazine is that they have many specialized issues which are of almost no interest to me. I think it's important to offer a variety with each issue.

Unless anyone objects I'd like to take on such a project. I'd be proud to work with a team of breeders to make it a great resource for gecko breeders, hobbyists, and newbies.

Things we would need to get started:
0) Ideas. Ideas for a name, articles, regular columns, etc.
- Some ideas are articles about care, general info, "in the wild", care sheet of the month, articles about enclosures, supplies, etc.
1) Articles. Lot of articles about anything gecko-related.
2) Some people to agree to do regular columns (ask the pro, health Q&A, etc).

I think with the support of the leo world (this forum) and some of the large, well known leo and other gecko breeders, this could really take off into a great thing for the gecko community overall.

Any thoughts, comments?

I love the idea and I would love to help all I can. I think it's a good idea to start it online until we get enough, but we could also just start it as a quarterly magazine or something. Only problem with that, is it might not get the name out enough. I personally don't know how to start that all up, but Brian sure seems to have a hold on it. This is starting to get interesting.

I agree 100%, thats the main reason I recently stopped subscribing to reptiles magazine. It always seemed to be on stuff that really didnt have any intrest to me, I understand it cant have all what I am intrested in but in my 5-6 years of subscribing to it, I cant remember much if any gecko stuff. Geckos popularity continues to grow. I personally think its a great idea :)
