How about an "Ask the Expert" column where people could ask a question (non-emergency of course)? Or "Guess the Morph"? I would like to see articles on common diseases and their symptoms...plus like a gecko first aide for some of the more common ailments such as prolapse, bad shed days, etc. A kid's page, or two, with puzzles and pics to color (of geckos of course!) to get the whole family involved. I think it would be great to have a "gecko of the month" where a species was highlighted each month or issue. A list of breeders and their websites would be awesome!

Okay, I better take a breath...

How about photo contests for different age levels and abilities? Or a topic is chosen and maybe 4-5 breeder's/experts are asked the same questions and the answers from all are included...

Like: "what do you feed and why?" And expert one would answer, then two, etc.

Pics of enclosures could be submitted and suggestions for upgrading could be made? (Might cause too much controversy...LOL)

Okay, another breathe...

Kathy

Awesome! I love all your ideas Brian! I know this can be done with all the great breeders and knowledgeable people here. It could have the potential to be something big and I have a lot of faith that you and those helping with it can pull it off. I would offer to Help but I'm not that great of a writer. I know a lot about different Herps but would not be able to put it down on paper and be artistic about it lol. I guess I could try and someone with more talent can edit it to make it sound better lol

One of the English teachers at my school gave me the following process I've used for newspaper articles. Make an outline of the basic points that you want to cover, then write it like you were talking to one person, then go back and edit it. The outline makes sure you cover everything, while writing it like you're talking to people make it flow really nice and make it easy to read. The final editing is just to touch it up.

I'm loving the ideas all... and realizing that this is really a huge project, but with huge positive potential. Keep the ideas coming!

I think to make management a little easier we should come up with a list of items to include, but more importantly if you have any talents (like you could create the gecko outlines for the kids drawing, you like coming up with puzzles, you can write some articles), post them here so I can get some idea of where we stand in terms of resources.

Well Finance is my specialty if that can help you with anything. I am always willing to help research and help with some facts here and there. It's a good idea to have multiple people proofread, and I would be willing to do that. I'll keep thinking.

I don`t know of a good name, but I do for a story. It would be called called "The real Geico Gecko" and would be about whatever type of day gecko that is. I just picture a cover, w/ the title, a gecko like him on there, and the information on that species.

I like this idea!

Y`know something like caresheets can be done one per issue, then come up w/ several other sections. We have our focus, the Leopard Gecko who needs it BTW**. Then whats left is room for some advertisement. I don`t know if commercial type companies are wanted, but printed ads, for the different breeders, that would like to advertise, could work.

**Reptiles magazine isn`t doing crap for Leopard Geckos, nor will they IMO. Look how far behind they are in morphs. I am actually surprised they don`t have someone looking into featuring the newer morphs. They more or less advertised for Ron Tremper w/ the whole Raptor article. lol:main_rolleyes:

Yes, the GGA has a very nice bi-annual magazine. I may be wrong, but based on the articles I don't think it's really meant for the masses. It appears to be much more academic in nature, and (I think) what has been suggested here is more intended for the herp-show attending and hobbyist crowd.

I'm sure Kelli could get in toot-sweet with the enigmas. But, she has to try to get in...and somehow I don't think writting an article is high on her list of ways to spend time. Of course Tremper got in with the RAPTOR ... a good business man needs good press.

there could be reviews of equipment like racks, heat mats, thermostats etc, acurate care sheets instead of the rubbish pet shops giveout, articles on how to breed and incubate eggs, simple descriptions of genetics...these are just a few ideas. but this wouldnt be in the uk would it :(

I like that idea as well as a "breeder of the month" article featuring a personal story of what got them into geckos, some pics of their racks/incubators and what morphs that breeder works with and why.
