mating in the WILD!

I was walking behind my garage today to go get the four wheeler i had left out. I rounded the corner, and walked around an old truck that we are using for parts. Well I look beside the truck and see the most amazing thing I have ever seen. These two snakes (im going to call them black snakes since im not keen on the species yet) were next to the truck out in the OPEN!!! I wish i could have gotten the pics when i first seen em. They we STANDING face to face off the ground like a foot and a half, the rest of their lower bodies was twisted and on the ground. They looked like Cobras! They were 5-6 ft long. I was so amazed and in AWE!

Well I SPRINTED back to the house to grab the camera and ran back and this is what i got. Unfortunatley they sorta made their way under the truck.

Are you sure they are mating and not two males fighting over a female? That twisting looks more like two males fighting than a normal mating between a pair. I'll ask Ken to take a look since he's the colubrind person in the house, but I've never seen them lock all twisted like that.

If that is a pair of black rats mating then that is the most twisted I have ever seen them during copulation. I am thinking it's two males fighting from the pics I see above.

Perhaps king snakes? I might be wrong but I think we have king snakes in VA that are black. Although I can see they have some patterning on their sides.

Well Eric as you know I am from that area and would have to say those are diffently black rat snakes which are native to your area. The banded pattren showing threw is a died give away. I actually know a guy that lives about five mins. away from you that breeds these snakes and releases the young in the wild to help bring back native snakes to Maryville that has been killed off. I have only seen two snakes do this once before in my life and those were garter snakes many moons ago. I have bred rat snakes before in the past and know this isn't a breeding picture for sure, So I will have to go with every one elses thoughts on this as it makes perfect sence of two males battling. Great pictures man.

because i was excited as shit to see something like this, in the wild, in my back yard. Didnt mean to offend you :main_rolleyes:

Oh and I did post this in the Colubrid section first...but i know this gets more traffic and I figured people would want to see this.

I only said that they were mating because ones Hemipenile regions were exposed. One was physically larger than the other. Not only longer but had more girth. You cant really tell in these pictures, but the snakes were around 5 1/2 foot and the other around 6. another reason i thought they were mating.... They were squeezing the hell out of each other though and the whole staring eachother down thing makes perfect sense, so let em fight!
