Mating problems...

Ok, so this is my first year breeding and I'm a bit uneasy about putting my geckos together. Last night I put my female in with the male and he rattled his tail and everything and he would sniff her upper tail area. Then she ran in his cave and when he went in there I heard noises so I pulled the cave up and she was biting him. I know it takes time for the geckos to breed but I 'm afraid to leave them in the cage together unsupervised for fear of them hurting each other or dropping a tail. What should I do? Any help would be great!!!

biting is part of the mating process. i call them love bites. as long as he is not breaking the skin ot attacking her, everything is going as it should be

she will nip back and again as long as she is not breaking the skin or attacking then they should be ok. alot of times if after a few days of her not being receptive to him and biting him to get away, you may want to take him out. she may not quite be receptive to him yet.

is she ovulating?

also it's generally better to put the male in the females enclosure :)

Ok I was told to put the female in the males cage. I have no clue if she's ovulating. I looked at her stomach but I don't know if she has really thick skin or what because I can't see anything like I can on some of my other geckos.

Its quite odvious when the female is ovualting unless shes overweight then it can be hard to tell. but if shes a decent weight say 55gs to about 70gs you will know whens shes ovualting youll see a bright pink spot under her belly. if you cant see this then she aint ovualting but if you leave em together for a few days and spilt them up chances are she start ovulating soon check her again in a week or so the introduction of the male sometimes induces ovulation. If not she should start ovulating soon. how old is she and do you know her weight? Its my first breeding season too i didnt manage it last year it turned out i had a hot femail. but i doubt very much yours is a hot female if she just nipping a little bit this is how females say no mine full on attacked the male and tour a massice chunk of skin from my mails tail wasnt a pretty site. any way i got some new females and one of em is currently gravid should have eggs in about 2 weeks. good luck!

I too have this problem! However I only have 2 vivs and 2 male and 2 females so unfortunatly I am unable to split them unless I change their cagemate. However its possible one of my females is gravid but hard to tell because she won't sit still long enough forme to see :S

I find it easiest to look if you raise them up y their tails. It doesn't freak them out as much since their front legs are still down. You can lift them high enough to see their belly and check for ovulation or eggs. If you just try to flip them over you will almost never find a gecko that doesn't freak out.

I weighted her today and it said about 120gs but that included the container which is about 30-40gs. She is a Patternless Stripe het Tremper het Eclipse(Raptor), so I was wondering if maybe her size has something to do with it.
