Maybe I'm just paranoid

So the first hatchling of the season died about four hours after coming out of his egg. He was a mack. And pretty gorgeous :(

And now this adorable little jungle pops out today. Little bit of the egg sack still hanging on (scared the crap out of me, me thinking it was intestines or something). She was pretty lively when I found her, but since putting her in her tank, on the heat pad, she just lays there with her eyes half closed and occasionally wiggles her tail or repositions her face.

I found her 15 minutes ago flopped over onto her back, lying with her eyes half closed again. Aargh. I thought she was dead. Turns out she was fine, just napping that way.

I'm so scared I'm gonna lose this little one too. I don't think this is normal behavior..

Could she have been too warm, maybe? Wouldn't she move off the heat pad if she was?

I don't think this is normal behavior.

I can tell you that's not normal behavior. And I don't know why they sometimes do it. But I can tell you that one of the two that I had die within 48 hours after hatching (they were siblings), I found also on its back. My racks have back heat, but this little one was lying in the middle of a 6 qt. Sterilite box. So nowhere even close to the heat.

Like I said, I don't know what the significance of them laying on their back is, but I'm sure its not normal. I hope that, in contrast to mine, your hatchling pulls through. :main_yes:

After I put her on her belly, she curled up in a corner and went to sleep. She moves about every 5 minutes or so to a new position and I haven't found her on her back again since.

That is weird, I guess you'll just have to watch her & wait to see if she'll be ok, she sounds ok. Pics?

well that's the position she's in now. After I took the pic her tail started spazzing out, twisting and writhing, for about 10 seconds. She's been doing that randomly since she hatched...

I hope she'll be okay for you. I've never had one go to its back, so I'm pretty sure it's not normal.

Aah! She just did it again! Maybe she's moving and accidentally moves too far, flips over, and doesnt know/doesnt care what she should do next? Neurological problem, perhaps? It would explain the tail "spasms" too...

Geez, I hope not...

Poor baby. I don't know what to say other than I'm praying that she pulls through and evens out. Is she from the same parents as the first hatchling?

The "laying on their back" behavior, IMO, has to be due to something developemental. I don't think there's anything you could have done to save that little gecko, so don't beat yourself up over it. Sometimes these things just happen, and unfortunately there's not much we can do to help. :main_yes:
