hi all,

my leopard gecko cannot get the hang of the clear plastic dish that her meal worms are in. she looks at them, and tries to strike at them through the plastic, but she can't figure out how to crawl over the edge of the dish to get the worms!

does anyone else find this with their geckos? is she ever likely to learn?

Maybe use an opaque dish? Leos ain't the smartest, so they probably won't learn to go from the top. Even if they can see them from the top of something, they will probably just climb down and attack them from the sides fruitlessly. A ceramic bowl or a plastic one that can't be seen through work well.

Umm... I think they are smarter then you give them credit for... All my geckos started out by attacking the side of the bowel and within a week figured out that they need to go from the top... I use to keep fish and they could figure out what time and from what side of the tank I fed from... Lol.

Life always finds a way.

just keep trying with the dish you have. My phantom did the same thing and she eventually got the point to go from the top of the dish. I have since changed the dish to a hamster bowl from Hagen, because she started to knock the clear bowl over and chase the worms around, she loves the chase, but that resulted in the worms being everywhere in her tank.

hahaha the male do the exact same thing. he sees the worms through the plastic and try to bite them. after a while he attack from above!
meanwhile the female didnt know ther bowl was full of worms. always waiting for me to show her some. now she go straight to it!

haha, okay, I'll keep using the bowl and give her the chance to learn. It's good to hear that people have the same issues because I was starting to wonder if mine was. . . special.

try putting something in the cage that the gecko can climb onto and look down into the dish.

i agree with this i have some rocks in my tank that the geckos hide under and when they come out at night they climb all over them so i place the bowl of mealworms beside this and they have know problems taken them from the bowl

i've tried a transparent bowl and an opaque bowl, and she can't get the hang of either of them. i've even tried placing her on top of the bowl, but she doesn't pay attention to the worms.

oh well! i'll keep trying.

+1

I had the same problem with my dishes, until i put a piece of slate next to the dish, so when the gex walk on it, it elevates them a little higher and they look over... now, they stand on that and the feeding frenzy begins! lol

Mine are like puppy dogs tho! I have some that know exactly when i get home from work and are standing on it rite next to the food dish with their front 2 feet on it, just waiting on me to get home to drop some food in! lol...
