far side of sanity
so i got a meal worm dish and some meal worms (duh)
my leos before have not eaten them,
but our pet store is going to stop carrying crickets,:main_thumbsdown:
the next closest pet store is 45 minutes away. :main_no:
how do i convince my leos to eat the mealies?:main_huh:
they eat wax worms well, but those are really fatty and idont want to make my geckos unhealthy.
they normally eat the wax worms by hand, the crickets they hunt.
ive tried hand feeding the mealies but that was a no go.
i can try again but i dont think ill have time to feed each of them daily by hand.
any suggestions on how to get them to eat the mealies out of the bowl?:main_huh: :main_huh: :main_huh:

You could try putting them in a tub with nothing but the mealworms and leaving them there in low light for about half an hour. You could also try putting a few waxworms in a bowl with the mealworms. You could consider ordering crickets online and keeping them to feed them as needed. If you have more than one leo and if you get younger crickets (1/2" or 3/4" which is my favorite size) they can last awhile but also get fed off before they die of old age.

They will make the switch when hungry. Just make sure your offerings are fresh and lively-and dusted.

Mine would not eat mealies until I started dusting them with
Repashy's calcium plus.

If you want to switch from crix to mealies, just dust them, and
drop them in front of your gecko. They may refuse at first, and
if they are not used to them, they wont know it's food unless
they are moving. Mealies tend to stop moving after they have
been in a bowl for a while, then, your leo will ignore them for
sure.

Even if they refuse mealies at first, dont give up. If they are
hungry enough, they WILL eat them, they will not starve themselves
to death just because they dont like what's on the menu.

Won't normally starve themselves unless sick. Add a slice of carrot to the meal worm bowl, make a rock or slate build up around the bowl so it is easier for the gecko to see the worms and rest at the bowl height, see photo....take care. Hj

Or just use a glass one that they can see through.

I actually had to cover my glass bowls on a few. The kept striking the side over and over. Hard too! I suspect they would have eventually figured it out, but I switched to save a little brain damage. :)

LOL!! I know what you mean.
I hate it when they lunge for a cric or mealie and whack their head
on the glass! ouch!!
I keep thinking they are going to injure themselves, but they never do.
