i got a couple beetles now and how long do I have to wait before they start breeding and is mashed cheerios good substrate for them?

They are probably breeding already but the eggs and newly hatched worms are too small to see. Keep them on their substrate and move them to new bedding in about a month. Put the old bedding in a container and eventually you will see the worms. As cereals go, I think cheerios are among the better choices. I use a powdered gutload that has a variety of grains.

What to feed them ... well that may depends.

For raising ... keep the cost low. I am thinking about a mixture of Chicken Crumbles (feed store), wheat bran (health food store) and dog food.

Put it in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes at about 250 I think and kill off any mites.


For gutloading ... the easiest is probably a cricket dry gutload.


For moisture ... I am using a slice of apple or sud and I am thinking about using a carrot.

Be careful buying chicken crumble. I'm convinced that even when they say it doesn't have hormones added, it's a gamble.
