i have a year old normal leopard gecko and he has MBD. He is the size of a 1 month old and only weighs 9 grams.. I think i might have to euthanize him but i don't have the money and my grandparents refuse to take him to the vet. I dont want him to suffer anymore so i dont know what to do.. He does an army crawl and his limbs are deformed. they bend inwards and he cant straighten them. He cant get the shed off of his feet himself and when i try to help him he bites me and freaks out. i seriously dont know what to do :(

Here's a picture of him..

Take him to the vet ASAP!!!
Why don't they want to go to the vet?
If you keep animals you should always have some money handy for cases like this.
You should have taken him to the vet as soon as you had seen any symptomes of MBD,
not at a stage where he is in agony.
Lend some money from someone then, but you gotta get him to the vet as soon as possible!!!!

My grandparents agreed to take him to the vet tomorrow to get euthanized. i called the vet and they said they can't take him today. its going to cost 135 for the vet visit and the euthanization. i'm crying my eyes out cause i wish i could take him out of his misery today. i feel so bad that they wouldnt let me take him sooner..

My question is, if you knew that this gecko was suffering from extreme Metabolic Bone Disease, if you saw his pitiful, underweight, measly body every day shrinking smaller and smaller until the day in which you posted this, then why did you wait until now? Why did you wait until the gecko is practically on death's door, and whose condition appears so terrible and desperate that it make me feel physically sick, before reaching out for help? Watching an animal go through "misery" and "suffering" each and every day painfully, desperately trying to move its tiny body on its deformed legs, without doing anything about it is downright animal abuse to me. Metabolic Bone Disease is not something that just "happens" overnight. It is a slow, detrimental, debilitating condition caused by a lack of calcium over time. EDIT - I've just noticed you've been on this forum as long as I have, and all your posts over the past five days have been about your other gecko. Why did you keep this gecko in hiding until now??

A large, essential part of being a responsible animal caretaker is having the extra money in hand for vet care, to ensure that if one unfortunately falls ill or needs veterinary assistance, you will be able to provide adequate treatment and relief. If you cannot provide money in scenarios like this, then you really have no business owning the animal at all. You should've rehomed this gecko to someone who could.

You lament that you feel bad for him, and rightfully so. That poor, beautiful living creature has just been deprived of a good life under your hands, and instead spent every day getting closer and closer to the abysmal, deadly physical state that he's in now.

I know ive been a bad caretaker but i had no choice. my grandparents absolutely refused to take him to the vet intill now. I've taken care of him the best i could. I've balled my eyes out infront of them begging them to take him to the vet multiple times. They didnt agree to take him to the vet till they saw me physically getting sick from being so upset. I'm a poor 16 year old that just got a job yesterday, so don't try to come at my throat when i had no choice.

I know how harsh this sounds... but if he is in that much pain and suffering and your grandparents wont take him to be put down cause of costs, then ( i know this sound very harsh) you might have to put him down your self, humanly though. again i know it sounds harsh but i think its just to selfish to let him soffer because of lack of planing on your part (not trying to be rude) in planing a vet emergency fund, because it is enevitable that you will at some point have to take him to the vet. :( you should keep this in mind so next time one of your animals has to be taken to the vet you are prepared :(

well i am going to take him to the vet tomorrow.. they're finally allowing me to use what little money i have to take him for a check up and most likely put him down. I didnt mean for him to suffer but i've been telling them he's needed to go to the vet since i noticed the MBD. I definitely wouldn't be able to put him down myself so i'm glad they're taking him the vet tomorrow.

This picture made me cry :'(.
PLEASE if you have any more and plan to keep them, get them checked by a vet so they never have to suffer the way this poor thing has.
or do the right thing and re-home them to some one who can afford to keep them until you have the money to care for them properly.

Its clear you do do in fact emotionally care for him even if you couldn't physically. and I am sorry for your loss tomorrow.

I am speechless. This beautiful, gentle creature has been so severely neglected and abused there is no hope for it's survival. Humanely euthanizing this gecko is probably the most responsible and caring thing you have ever done, or could ever do for it. There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for allowing an animal to suffer in this way for so long. Grandparents or not, you do not deserve to be let off the hook.

Was there no other family members? friends? who could have helped you?
you should of brought him to the SPCA and let them deal with this .. esp when you couldn't take care of him. What happened to his tail to?

poor gecko.

This gecko took a LONG time to get into this condition, and it could have been fixed/prevented EASILY. How sad for the gecko. :(

Do you own any other geckos? If you do and you are unsure of any aspects of caring for them then please please please educate yourself on the proper care and husbandry. I hate to see poor animals suffer at the hands of their owners simply because they do not know how to properly care for them.

As said before, this does not happen overnight and it was unfair to keep the gecko when you were unable to care for it. Giving it to someone who could care for it properly would have been the right thing to do. But unfortunately its too late now, You may not like it but you need to listen the comments people have made. Hopefully it will make you a better owner, like that poor gecko deserved.

I cannot believe how this poor gecko must feel. :(

I do not intend to be mean, but why did you get a animal if you do not have spare money for the vet... ? I do understand it is costly at times, but you should of been prepared before you took on this animal, along with your other ones..

You could of re-homed this poor gecko for free when you realized he had MBD. How did you expect to cure or take care of it when your grandparents control what you do with your money?.:main_thumbsdown:. Regardless, other members have said what needed to be said and all that matters is you learn from this mistake and take caution to make sure this doesn't happen to your other gecko. Sorry for the loss.

this is what we did with my sister's sick gecko -
we put her on the tile floor in the kitchen for a few hours
then transfered her to the fridge
then transfered her to the freezer

this is what a herp vet told us

No. Freezing is NOT an Ok way to kill an animal.
http://www.ahc.umn.edu/rar/euthanasia.html

Freezing hurts. The tissue litteraly freezes over, their blood turns to ice, their skin dies while they are alive. It is not humane imo. This animal shouldn't have to be euthanized, its a bunch of bull. But unfortunately, it does and its disgusting. If you absolutely must euth an animal at home i can only think of using a C02 chamber, Pithing or lethal injection of approved chemicals. Coming from someone who just had to euthanize his favorite pet last week, i did a TON of research on the topic.

Before i get crabbed at about it, i realize freezing is a controversial topic and some may not agree, im voicing my opinion on it.
