I feel that no one as inexperienced as this person should never attempt a home euthanasia. Ever.
Yes freezing is known to cause crystals in the tissue which is painful and not humane.
Co2 isn't always the best method when dealing with reptiles, as their respiratory system is different than that of mammals (I do agree that co2 works well for small mammals).
Decapitation or pithing is to be left for the experienced, as one wrong move can cause more suffering.

The only humane euthanasia in my opinion is injection of some sort of barbiurate. Barbiturates are controlled substances and must be administered by licensed veterinarians.

If you can't afford the vet, you can't afford the pet.

this is what we did with my sister's sick gecko -
we put her on the tile floor in the kitchen for a few hours
then transfered her to the fridge
then transfered her to the freezer

this is what a herp vet told us

this literally made my blood run cold, thats horrific :'( your just as bad as the person leaving the poor creature to suffer.

I 100% agree with the comment "cant afford the vet, cant afford the pet"

I really cant see what the problem is. Iv moved to several places now and had to move to different herp vets all which have cost me less each time then what it dose to take my cats!

As stated before, "freezing" is still debatable. But I wouldnt say that comment makes that person horrible as the careless neglect of the animal from the original poster

ive seen mbd pretty often on craigslist or from people not knowing...but you know what? Its easy to correct specially if you KNOW it has it! how expensive is calcium? 3 bucks? My 5 yr old cousins even have 3 bucks... Ive treated MBD many times...I just dont understand how a person whom supposedly loves this animal wouldn't figure out SOME way to get that small amount.... When i was 14 i got a dog... i still have said dog. I worked my butt off to make enough to provide proper vet care for him and a dogs alot more expensive then a gecko... Poor little guy... Hopefully his suffering isnt much longer... If OP can afford a gram scale why not calcium... RIP little gecko.

I wouldn't say freezing is as bad as your bones disintegrating, you starving and your legs curling, though i still wouldnt say its humane. As stated by Kate, kinda anyways, reptiles are different from mammals, as are fish and insects and so on. What may be acceptable for one may not be for others. Many people think decapitation is almost instant death, which for reptiles is not always the case, nor for fish or other cold blooded animals.

BUT i will disagree on who should be euthanizing. Vets will not put down all animals, particularly something in say, the fish range. Or if your animal is severely injured/suffering pain, you may need to end its suffering quickly. Which is why the topic of home euthanasia is even discussed. In this case though, the leo would be better off with lethal injection. Not home remedy.

As for Pithing, i brought it up because it works. Thats all. ANY euthanasia technique can be done wrong and cause suffering, even injection. There is no perfect way to euthanize an animal. For those who dont know what Pithing means, its a term generally used for small reptiles and fish. You take a sharp needle, quickly slide it into the animals head and scramble the brain. Done right you can do it in 1-2seconds. It is instant death of the brain. Theres more to it but thats a brief summery.

Also, please shake me if im being WAY to authoritarian here.

I dont really agree with the freezing method, but at least that gecko only went through a few hours of pain (to long for my taste) but its an improvement over months of pain.

Are you kidding me? Reptiles and mammals are 2 complete different ball parks. We go into a sort of shock when we freeze, a cardiac arrest of sorts. When we get the "chills" thats our muscles trying to warm themselves. Whereas, cold blooded creatures fall asleep. (study's show there could be pain, but Letting vets do there job is my first choice) but in a case of prolonged animal abuse freezing does seem a lot better than having its limbs twist up and unable to move. When the owner won't take it to the vet.

I think I've only ever seen one or two other leos worse off than this...and it always makes me sick. This one makes me sad, too. Mostly because it's pretty obvious that this gecko is fed well enough to hold up a decent body thickness, but the bone deformity? Totally preventable.

Everyone has been as harsh as they needed to be, I won't add to it any worse.
Please, please learn the lesson you gleaned from this experience.
Please, please, please don't ever repeat it...
