I know that there are a lot of reasons people buy one gecko over another, but I just thought I'd bring up a thread on it (sorry if it's already been done before, but I'm just curious).

SO: Please only choose TWO different options. Let's see what people say...

Personally I`d rather support Reputable Breeders in the hobby its like buying a pair of Nikes compared to K-mart Brand ;)

Ya, I think that's a very valid point, but if you look at it, they had to come up from somewhere too, you know?

If we all just bought from great reputable breeders then only a select few like Ron Tremper, Steve Sykes, Marcia, etc would still be around.

Looks ( I only buy what I like...I don't buy because it has a fancy name)
Health (No explenation needed)

I don't care if the breeder has a good name. I want healthy animals that look good. I don't care about morph names, breeder names, exclusivity or location.
All factors that might 'impress' in a community. I'm not here to breed for others. I'm here because I like geckos

To me coloration and health are the two important things.

If you just got reptiles from breeders that only have a good reputation then what about these new breeders or unknown breeders that have a great knowledge, healthy animals, and nice coloration on their animals. Theres always going to be someone or multiple people you trust and like. These are the people who you get your geckos from a majority of the time but theres going to be deals with less known people. The less known people might not have a wide market to sell to thus no one knows them enought to give an opinion. If you talk to someone new and don't like your converstation, then don't deal with them. People have to sell and do business first to even get a reputation whether its good or bad.

Lower end morphs are around all like flies on crap but a good coloration in moprhs are a differant thing. Not everyone has the colors that make that morphs genes pop out. Colorations is important because of the aesthetic feel but also if you want to breed then your hatchlings will have the typically higher end coloration. Cheap prices typically go with less colortation or less know people or both. You have to be able to recognize which is which!

Health is obvious! If its not fat and healthy then you keep it! I feel bad for that animal but i can't waste my money all the time.

To me the two most important are Breeder, if you purchase from someone who has a good reputataion and good geckos to begin with the price is always worth it and you know that the animal is going to be healthy so that comes with the package, and second morph if you want to get into a certain project then you need to know the genetics of the said animal and the lineage history. I think that there are a lot of reputable breeders out there that have made really good names for themselves by the animals they sell and the service they provide. To become a good breeder all you have to do are those two things really and the rest takes care of itself, it also weeds all the people that aren't so much good breeders. That's why the people mentioned previously have made it for so long, they didn't get that way just by being around for a long time, they worked hard and now that hard work has been rewarded. A while ago there where some breeders that aren't around any more and some that comes to mind is Golden Gecko from NY and Rainwater Reptiles from Vegas don't ever know what happened to them?

I picked morph and breeder bcause a reputable breeder more then likely has already very healthy animals..I have other choices too tho like sex and location which would fall into my catagories as well seeing as there are not a lot of reputable breeders in my area and therefore would not want to go to a pet store to buy one (been there done that) so I guess there are many choices and would be hard to pick just 2...if the gecko looks healthy and the breeder is far away i may still purchase it if it is the appropriate sex and morph I am looking for... so many catagories not just two lol

Your comparing Apples to Oranges, although they all have their roots there were not nearly as many "breeders" as there are today.

You're a new and aspiring breeder, no? So are you saying no one should buy from you? I'm not picking on you. I just don't completely agree and would like to see and appreciate your point of view. I'm always up for a nice conversation.

Personally, you're right to an extent, I like getting my geckos from 'brand names' but do occasionally snatch a deal from small random sellers. If they have what I want, at the right price, then so be it.

How new is new? I have been producing Leopard Geckos for more then a week.... :main_rolleyes:

So to avoid getting an infraction, I`m not going to even comment...

You are more then welcome to email me to touch on this subject, I`m not going to disrespect Kelli and make a fool of myself on her Forum. ;)

I buy what looks exceptional and for genetics. It is nice to get those qualities from a reputable breeder. I do feel that everytime you purchase an animal there are limited guarantees and it is somewhat of a gamble. Also, a breeder's reputation is on the line everytime a transaction is completed. With that being said, when purchasing an animal be aware of what you like and what you don't like. Make certain non-negotiable standards for purchasing new stock. Follow those standards that you set by knowing they are a guideline that you can live by. Also, HAVE FUN DOING IT :) That's what this is all about right?

Ooops! I picked more than 2 choices... sorry! For me, it starts with a particular morph I am looking for. Then I go to the breeders I know are reputable and have great healthy animals, then look for the gecko I want. If they don't have it on their website or at their show table, I call them and ask what they have hiding, lol!

Ok, I haven't gotten that far. haha.

Maybe I'll come by sometime and raid your place. I guess I know now that you always have others on the "Black Market" ;). I always manage to stay forever, even though I say I'm just going to stop by and pick up the ones I liked online.
