It's hard to pick just two.

I guess what I do is find out what morph I want/need. Once I know that, I try to find a really good breeder. If I'm looking at good breeders, the animal should be healthy and look good. I have become really picky with who I'll buy from.

"a reputable breeder more then likely has already very healthy animals"
Maybe, but you can't always be sure.

"if you purchase from someone who has a good reputation and good geckos to begin with the price is always worth it and you know that the animal is going to be healthy so that comes with the package"

"so if I see a nice gecko that looks healthy"
I notice a lot of people going by looks- yes if a gecko is outwardly unhealthy you wouldn't get it but you can't always tell if an animal is "sick" just from looking at it. We've had a baby gecko grow to 92 grams(no giant genes) and had no idea he had grown up with hookworms. He showed no outward signs and we just assumed getting him from the breeder he was fine. It wasn't until his "sister" Cleo showed signs that we also got him checked out. Now he's going on 98 haha no he is not fat, well maybe a little.....:main_laugh:

"Would health go along with reputation? You can't have a good rep with unhealthy animals."
I do not think that good reputation and health of animals are synonymous. And I think gecko owners place too much faith in the breeders.

"I think that good gecko health and good breeder reputation are synonymous. The breeder wouldn't have a good reputation if their geckos were in poor health."
The breeder reputation may very well may be synonymous with good health but how many people are really checking??

"From getting geckos from great breeders you can assume they're healthy, they have great genetics, colors, etc."
Many people will ask about the genetics about their animals but not the health.

I'm not trying to be a thorn in anyone's side but it just seems like asking/talking about health or health related issues is somewhat taboo.:main_lipsrsealed: It bothered me to see so many assuming that reputable breeders have healthy animals when i've checked and some passed and some failed. I'm not at all bent out of shape over the results I somewhat expect it to happen if you are taking care of tons of geckos, snakes, turtles and whatever else. And I still think that these breeders have some of the highest quality animals. It's just that the consumer/breeder/hobbyist needs to take the health of their animal into their own hands and not rely on a breeders reputation. This rant was all for the love of geckos...:main_laugh:

Whether the breeder is "well known" or not, I, like Kristi, figure out what morph I want then try to find a good breeder who has what I want.
OR if I'm browsing around and find a gecko that just SPEAKS to me and makes my jaw drop, I'm going to inquire about that animal.
And what do I expect when I inquire about that animal?
A prompt, friendly, and informative response.

NO ANIMAL is worth dealing with a crappy breeder.

I don't care how well known a breeder is, if they do not have the time of day to get back to me within a reasonable amount of time, they've lost me as a potential customer.

I also look at what breeders feed. If I'm buying a hatchling-sized gecko, I don't really mind what is being fed.
But if I'm buying an adult, I DO care what is being fed.
Because I honestly believe that a gecko who is provided a variety of foods is going to be a better eater than one that has only been exposed to one feeder its entire life into adulthood.
But THAT is just a personal preference.
How well a gecko eats is a breaker for me. I understand there are other variables that come into play when a gecko doesn't eat right (ovulating females is one), but food exposure is a big deal to me.

Health is a huge concern, too. Why would ANYONE want an unhealthy gecko just because it's a certain look or morph??

Cost may or may not play a part on whether or not I buy a gecko. If I REALLY want a gecko, I'll get it. It may just not be right when I want it.:D

All of those other things are important, too.

Why can't we have them all???

Why can't it be a complete package?

Most of my geckos were bought as a complete package investment.
I bought from good breeders, I bought good eaters, I bought healthy, and I bought the morph/color/whatever that I wanted.:D

I will have to agree with a lot of people that a good breeder rep is important but that shouldn't be limited to the Main breeders. I am a new breeder (1st year) and am pretty knowledgeable. I have about a year worth of research prior to beginning and get most of my breeders from Steve Sykes and ask him questions if I have problems.

Given that I voted on health and morph.
Health is extremely important because what good is a sick gecko.
Morph because you need to know what you are getting if your breeding. If your not breeding then I don't think Morph is a big deal.

Looks ( I only buy what I like...I don't buy because it has a fancy name)
Health (No explenation needed)

I don't care if the breeder has a good name. I want healthy animals that look good. I don't care about morph names, breeder names, exclusivity or location.
All factors that might 'impress' in a community. I'm not here to breed for others. I'm here because I like geckos

Totally agree with you Van, If it looks great and its healthy, Its good enough for me.

I think "health" is the most important factor; so I picked "health" and "breeder" - breeder with good reputation for producing nice and healthy animals. If an animal is healthy, the colors will be nice and bright anyway. I had my experience of getting unhealthy leos from a pet shop, both died and that REALLY breaks my heart; so I'd rather pay more and get guaranteed healthy ones that can live a long life.

i think the breeder matters and the health obviously, though the two should come hand in hand, or else what makes a breeder reputable? and looks are of course a big part, even if some don't admit it...

Personally I`d rather support Reputable Breeders in the hobby its like buying a pair of Nikes compared to K-mart Brand ;)

i go for health, yeah i want certain geckos and i will get them but the health comes first. just because someone is a big breeder doesn't mean you get any better quality geckos :)

When I buy something I already have in mind what I want. It doesnt matter who it comes from to me just as long as I get a healthy gecko that fits the ideas for breeding projects that I have in mind.
