Hey Everybody,

This is the "journal" of my 120g Leo Tank. So far it is almost ready to go. I am just sorting out a few problems that it may have, so that the leos can be safe and happy when they go into the tank.

I do not want to start a fight about if this tank is too big, so please, if you have a problem with it, please keep it to your self. I have already made a promise to another member here that if there are any problems, or the leos aren't doing well, i will divide the tank into smaller portions!

To start it off:
Tank Type: Vivarium
Tank Size: 120g 5'x18"x25"
Plants: Succulents
Animals: Leos
Humid Hides: 2
Hides: As many as i can fit!
Temp Day: 30celsius
Temp Night: 25celsius
Humidity: 45-50%
Substrate: Slate, Sand(hopefully will be changed)

Now the pics!!!

Feedback Appreciated!

Now i want to get rid of the sand but still want it natural looking. If i were to grout the pieces together would they stick and would it work?

Thanks So Much

I don't have a uth or a calci dish. RIght now i don't need the uth but i will end up buying one because when it's winter here my house stays at 20. And for the calci dish, do you really need one if you dust or gut feed the food?

Thanks

Nice big tank! I think you'll need an UTH even if its not winter yet; they need belly heat of at least 90-92F to be healthy. The bright light is also not necessary, but if you really want to keep it, you'll need to provide them with lots of hide; it'll be nice if you could cover the top of the humid hide with something so its darker there.

The tank is nice. I really like the water dishes, did you make those out of clay, or buy them? Also, are the lights Viper HQI's? Cause they sure look like em, and I'd definatly not run those!

Ok, where would i be able to buy calcium?
The lights are viper hqi's, mostly for the plants but i can use less brighter lights!
I bought the water dishes from a store!
Ok, i'll look into getting the uth!
I plan to cover the hides and try to make them look more natural.

Thanks again,
Seaserpant

I am wondering how you will be maintaining the proper ambient air temps in that large aquarium... I know you said to keep it to yourself if you have a problem with the size, but hey, its a public forum and other new keepers should know that there will be issues when using such a large tank that was made to hold fish, not reptiles...

With an aquarium set up that large there will be problems with maintaining proper heat gradients and spaces that large will certainly stress out leopard geckos... Especially that all four sides and the top are transparent... Bigger is not always better and in this case it is almost always worse...

I would keep the metal halides, the plants will need them. But a UTH is a must. Why get rid of the sand? I think it looks better than grout.

Thanks for putting it up respectfully! Right now the Metal Halides are supplying most of the ambient air temp, but i am worried that during the winter that the air drop will go down and the halides won't be able to keep the temp up. Right Now the temp in the house is 22celsius and the tanks temp is 28celsius.
Could i use one of the basking lamps to help with this?

I'm going to get rid of the sand because the geckos could accidentally eat it and it would back up their digestion system causing them to die a slow painful death from impaction. :(

Would the Uth Be able to heat up the slate to make it warm enough for the gecko? (I know the geckos get the heat through their belly!
Since the heat on the other side of the tank has to be lower, would i be able to use a basking lamp to keep the ground warm for the gecko?

Thanks So much

Looks great, you should paint those pipes black or something like that so they dont stick out so much. Other then that it looks great. Also what would be really nice, is if you could get some of those rock ledges that go on the back wall of the tank.

I think your tank looks great! I just upgraded to a 70gallon tank, your's looks about as long as mine, just a bit taller. So far all the temps in my tank are doing fine, I live in Nova Scotia where the weather is always messed (we haven't had sun for more than two days yet this summer!) so to bring up the air temps I use a 60w normal bulb that runs for maybe... 8ish hours. I only use this on cold days and in the winter, the rest of the time the UTH keeps the temps just fine. I also live on the third floor of my house so my room is always the hotest.
I also put a lot of big things in my tank to help keep the temps a bit more even, it also helps fill out the space and gives her lots to adventure and play with!

Oh and I think you can get magnetic ledges from the pet store, or do what I did and make foam rock ones!

For in my aquariums, I took aquarium sealant, and spread it over the outside of the pipes, and rolled them in sand(or small crushed coral in one case). I let it cure for about a week, and they did very well, and looked great.

Would that work in a gecko tank? Or maybe rolling it in gravel instead of sand? Not a good idea?
